The fourth episode of The Night Manager Season 2 peels back the layers of a massive conspiracy and deals a major blow to the heroes. After the shocking reveal that Richard Roper is alive, the story moves fast, explaining his survival and revealing a plan to start a civil war. A key character is killed, trust is broken, and the enemy finally knows Jonathan Pine is back in the game.

This episode, titled “All is Lost,” shifts the season into high gear. It explains last week’s big twist and sets the stage for a direct clash between Pine and Roper. The personal stakes for every character are now clearer and higher than ever.

How Richard Roper Faked His Death and Returned

The biggest question from Episode 3 is answered quickly. Richard Roper did not die in Syria. He made a deal with his captors. The plan was for him to pay back the $300 million he owed them. To do this, he needed to disappear.

The night before Angela Burr was to identify his body, Roper walked into her motel room. He gave her a terrible choice. She had to declare him dead and retire from her job. If she refused, he threatened to kill her, Jonathan Pine, and her young daughter back in London. To protect her family, Angela agreed to the lie. She kept this secret from Pine to keep him safe from Roper’s revenge.

Roper then vanished until now. He reappeared in Colombia, working with his secret son, Teddy Dos Santos, and with secret support from inside British intelligence.

Angela Burr’s Confession and a New Mission

Jonathan Pine, using the alias Matthew, sends a furious message to Angela: “WHY DID YOU LIE TO ME?”. He tracks her down to her new, quiet life in France and demands answers.

Angela flies to Colombia to meet Pine face-to-face. At the airport, she confesses everything about Roper’s threat. She explains that she told the truth to Rex Mayhew after retiring, but nothing happened until Mayra Cavendish took over. Angela reveals there is now a “civil war” inside the British intelligence agencies. She asks Pine for more time to understand who is on their side.

Angela Burr tells Jonathan: “I had to declare him dead, and retire from ‘The River’. If I refused him, he would kill us both, and send people to London to murder my child. So I did what he asked.”

Pine is angry but understands her impossible position. However, he cannot wait. He knows Roper’s plan is moving forward and must be stopped now.

Roper’s Grand Plan for Colombia and Beyond

While hiding in a Colombian compound, Roper meets with his old partner, Sandy Langbourne. Their conversation reveals the full, terrifying scale of his ambition. This is not just another arms deal.

Roper plans to use Teddy’s army to start a revolution in Colombia. A politician named Jose Cabrera will lead the coup. The chaos will let Roper and his backers take control of the country’s valuable natural resources like copper and oil.

The operation is fully backed by Mayra Cavendish from inside MI6. As a reward, Mayra has promised Roper a grand estate in the English countryside and a new passport so he can return home a free man. Roper sees this as just the beginning. He tells Sandy, “And if I can do it here, I can do it anywhere”.

Unknown to Roper, a private investigator working for Pine has bugged the collar of one of his dogs. This device records Roper explaining the entire plan, providing potential evidence.

Teddy’s Descent and a Deadly Trap

Teddy Dos Santos is increasingly desperate. He believes his problems will be solved once he kills the prosecutor, Alejandro, who has frozen his assets. He is also eager to send his new investor, “Matthew,” out of the country.

Teddy personally escorts Pine to the airport and puts him on a plane to Paris. Just before leaving, Pine leans in and whispers, “I’ll pray for your soul, Eduardo” โ€“ Teddy’s real name. This moment stuns Teddy, but he lets Pine go, focused on Alejandro.

What Teddy does not know is that Pine never boards the plane. He doubles back to meet Angela. Meanwhile, Teddy sets a trap. He lures Alejandro to a government building with false promises. Roxana, who is being held prisoner by Teddy, manages to call Pine and warn him it is a trap.

Pine and Sally race to save Alejandro, but they are too late. Teddy’s men kidnap the prosecutor and take him to an abandoned factory. There, Teddy executes Alejandro. Pine arrives moments later, saving Alejandro’s young driver but failing to stop the murder.

The Final Confrontation is Set

In the factory shootout, Teddy sees his attacker clearly. He realizes “Matthew Ellis,” his Hong Kong investor, is the same man trying to destroy his operation. Devastated, Teddy calls his father.

A panicked Teddy tells Roper that everything has gone wrong and that the investor betrayed them. Roper demands to see a picture. In a dated but dramatic moment, Teddy faxes a photograph to the remote compound.

Richard Roper looks at the image and immediately recognizes the face of the man who ruined him years ago: Jonathan Pine. The game is up. Pine’s cover is blown. The final, personal battle between the two enemies is now unavoidable.

The episode ends with a small victory amid the loss. Pine tracks down the car holding Roxana, kills her guard, and rescues her. They ride away together, but the cost has been immense. A good man is dead, the villain knows his hunter is close, and the British government itself seems to be the enemy.
