The final chapters of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo are making readers nervous. The short sequel series, set 68 years after the original story, is heading toward a major conclusion. Recent chapters strongly suggest that main characters are in mortal danger and that the story is aiming to change the world of Jujutsu Kaisen forever. The current conflict, involving new heroes and an alien race called the Simurians, is building toward a final choice. This choice could cost the heroes their lives but might also bring an end to the long war against cursed spirits.

The Okkotsu Siblings Face Tragic Fates

The sequel’s story centers on Yuka and Tsurugi Okkotsu, the grandchildren of the original series’ characters Yuta Okkotsu and Maki Zenin. From the beginning, their journey has been marked by personal struggle and impending loss.

Yuka Okkotsu is fighting a terminal illness and has only three months left to live. She has taken on the role of Earth’s representative in a battle against the powerful Simurian Dabura. Meanwhile, her brother Tsurugi learned about her condition and swore to protect her. His story reached a critical point in Chapter 21. During a duel with the Simurian diplomat Maru, Tsurugi had the chance to win but chose not to. He decided a future where he defeated Maru would not be right and allowed Maru’s attack to hit him.

“He couldโ€™ve won the battle, but thought a future where he won wouldnโ€™t be right.” โ€” Description of Tsurugi’s choice in Chapter 21.

The chapter ends with Tsurugi passing out from severe injuries on Maru’s shoulders. Maru did not rush to get him medical help, leading many to believe Tsurugi may not survive. At the same time, Yuka’s status is also unknown. She hid inside a shadow during the fight between Dabura and the powerful shikigami Mahoraga and has not been seen since.

The Original Cast’s Fate is Revealed

Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo has also provided long-awaited updates on beloved characters from the original series, confirming the fates of many. The story takes place in 2086, meaning most human characters from the first manga have died of old age if nothing else.

Several major deaths have been confirmed. Maki Zenin and her husband Yuta Okkotsu were confirmed to have died before the sequel began. Hana Kurusu has also passed away, with Nobara Kugisaki mentioning her funeral. The story strongly implies that Megumi Fushiguro is dead, as his Ten Shadows technique has been inherited by Yuka Okkotsu.

However, there are some survivors. Nobara Kugisaki appears as an old woman. In a surprising reveal, the fan-favorite character Aoi Todo was confirmed to still be alive. Nobara mentioned that Todo might know where Yuji Itadori is, though she also noted that “everyone hates him and refuses to stay in contact with him”. This continues the running joke about Todo’s difficult personality.

The most significant survivor is Yuji Itadori. Due to his unique powers, Yuji has stopped aging entirely. He has lived through the entire 68-year gap and has made a dramatic return in the story’s final act.

Yuji and Maru Plan to End Curses Forever

The return of Yuji Itadori is directly connected to the sequel’s biggest possible plot twist. After the battle with Tsurugi, the Simurian Maru revealed a radical plan. He wants to use his unique power, combined with others, to eliminate cursed spirits from the world permanently.

Maru’s cursed technique, called “Chaos and Harmony,” has chosen Yuji as a key part of this plan. The goal is to create a world where cursed spirits are no longer born. This would end the need for constant fighting between sorcerers and curses. To do this, Maru needs three things: the immense cursed energy stored for decades in Yuta Okkotsu’s ring, his own technique, and the power of Mahito’s Idle Transfiguration.

The idea is to alter every person in Japan who has cursed energy. If everyone can control their cursed energy perfectly, it would not leak out and form cursed spirits. This plan connects directly to dreams held by characters in the original series. Both Yuki Tsukumo and Suguru Geto wanted to end cursed spirits, though their methods were very different.

“I want to create a world where Cursed Spirits arenโ€™t born anymore.” โ€” Maru explaining his ultimate goal.

If this plan works, it would achieve what the original manga did not. It would provide a true conclusion to the central problem of the Jujutsu Kaisen world. It also means that if Maru and Yuji succeed, there may be no need for future stories in this universe, as the core conflict would be resolved.

A Legacy of Sacrifice and Regret

The themes of sacrifice and regret connect the sequel back to the original story. A flashback in Chapter 21 shows an older Maki Zenin talking to her grandson Tsurugi. She reflects on her past and the death of her sister Mai, who sacrificed herself so Maki could gain full power.

“Because of Mai, I got stronger. But sometimes I wonderโ€ฆdid I really need to get stronger?” Maki asks in the flashback. She admits there is not a day when she does not wish she could have chosen a future where her sister was still alive. This wisdom influenced Tsurugi’s own choice not to kill Maru, showing how lessons are passed between generations.

Yuji’s long life has also changed him. Once a passionate young sorcerer, the Yuji of Modulo is more detached. He has outlived his friends and seen decades of conflict. When asked for help, he said he would only “clean up whatever remains” after the current battle is over. This shows a man tired from a very long life of fighting.

The Final Chapters Approach

Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo was always planned as a short series. Creator Gege Akutami said it would run for about six months and fill about three volumes. With the release of Chapter 21, the story is in its final stretch. Chapter 22 is scheduled for release on February 15, 2026.

This upcoming chapter is expected to show Yuji and Maru beginning their plan to end cursed spirits. It will also likely reveal the outcome of the battle between Dabura and Mahoraga, which could determine Yuka’s fate. Fans are waiting to see if Tsurugi survives his injuries and what happens to Yuka.

The story’s title, “Modulo,” comes from mathematics. It refers to numbers that are considered equivalent in a certain system. This fits the story’s theme of finding common ground between humans and aliens, and perhaps between sorcerers and the spirits they fight.

The plan to end all cursed spirits is a huge risk. It could require the ultimate sacrifice from the characters involved. But if it works, it would bring true peace to a world that has only known conflict. The final pages of this sequel will determine if the heroes’ sacrifices lead to that better future or end in tragedy.
