The Remarried Empress has grown from a Korean web novel into a global franchise with nearly 3 billion views across its webtoon format. A live-action K-drama starring Shin Min-a, Ju Ji-hoon, Lee Jong-suk, and Lee Se-young arrived on Disney+ and Hulu on November 3, 2026, one day ahead of schedule. An anime adaptation is also set for 2027 on Crunchyroll. This breakdown covers every major character, the backstories that drive the plot, the divorce that starts it all, and how the story ends.
What The Remarried Empress Is About
Navier Ellie Trovi is the empress of the Eastern Empire. She has known her husband, Emperor Sovieshu, since childhood. Their marriage was arranged to keep the empire stable, and for years they ran the court together without open conflict.
The peace breaks when Sovieshu finds Rashta, a runaway slave, during a royal hunt and brings her to the palace as his mistress. Sovieshu later demands a divorce. Navier accepts, but she adds one condition: she wants approval to marry Heinrey, the crown prince of the Western Kingdom.
That single condition turns a painful divorce into the start of a new life.
Navier Ellie Trovi: The Perfect Empress
Navier comes from the House of Trovi, a noble family with a long history of daughters marrying into the imperial family. She was chosen as a child to marry Sovieshu because of her intelligence, kindness, and noble bloodline.
As a child, Navier was mischievous. Training turned her into the “Ice Queen” — calm, strategic, and composed at all times. She improved infrastructure, trade, diplomacy, security, and social welfare across the Eastern Empire.
Navier’s older brother, Kosair Trovi, is the next head of the family. He looks exactly like Navier but has the opposite personality: rough, reckless, and hot-tempered. He is fiercely protective of his sister and is willing to go to great lengths against Rashta.
Emperor Sovieshu: The Husband Who Planned a Temporary Divorce
Sovieshu grew up alongside Navier. As children, they were close. He gave her the nickname “Sir Leedy” during their playful adventures, and they planted a harmony tree in the imperial garden.
A childhood incident shaped his entire marriage. Sovieshu and Navier ate cookies that his mother had laced with an abortion drug meant for his father’s concubine. The drug carried a risk of infertility. Sovieshu believed the cookies left Navier unable to have children. He never told her the truth.
When Rashta becomes pregnant, Sovieshu builds a plan. He will divorce Navier, make Rashta empress long enough for her child to be born legitimate, then divorce Rashta and remarry Navier. The plan depends on Navier waiting for him. She does not.
Rashta: Runaway Slave Turned Royal Mistress
Rashta was born a slave and endured abuse under her former master. She faked her death to escape and already had a secret son named Ian before she arrived at the palace. The boy’s father is Alan Rimwell, son of her former slave owner.
Rashta’s early days in the palace read as survival as much as calculation. The show displays the scars on her back and the fear she carries from her past. Once she gets a taste of palace life, she starts wanting more. Lee Se-young, who plays Rashta, described her approach to the character:
“Because she has to be a character who can become the seed of conflict, I considered that first and then built the character from there. At the same time, I tried to make her a character you resent but can’t quite hate.”
Heinrey: The Bird-Shapeshifting Prince
Heinrey Alles Lazlo is the crown prince of the Western Kingdom, which later becomes the Western Empire. His family has a secret ability: they can transform into birds. Heinrey uses this power to spy on the Eastern Empire.
Rumors paint him as a playboy, but he is loyal and has been drawn to Navier since he first saw her. He courts her secretly while she is still married to Sovieshu. Lee Jong-suk, who plays Heinrey, spoke about what drew him to the role:
“Love, divorce, entanglement, the struggle for power, all make for a fascinating subject matter.”
The Divorce Court Scene That Starts Everything
The story opens with a flash-forward to the divorce court. Sovieshu demands a divorce so he can marry Rashta. Navier agrees calmly and then shocks the court by requesting approval to remarry Heinrey.
That moment defines the entire series. Navier refuses to let her husband decide her future. She takes control of what comes next.
What Happens to Sovieshu in the End
Sovieshu keeps the throne but loses almost everything else.
- Navier marries Heinrey and has a daughter named Lari.
- Rashta faces a paternity test. The test says her daughter Glorym is not Sovieshu’s child. Their marriage collapses. Rashta is tried, imprisoned, and dies.
- Glorym is smuggled out of the palace. Sovieshu believes she died in a bandit attack. She is later revealed to be alive.
- Sovieshu’s mind deteriorates. After Navier falls into a coma following an attack in the West, he starts hallucinating, falls from a window, and slips into a coma himself.
Sovieshu refuses to take a third wife. He names Lari, Navier and Heinrey’s daughter, as his successor. Duke Trovi acts as the empire’s de facto ruler because Sovieshu is no longer stable enough to govern.
How the Webtoon and Novel End
The webtoon concluded its main story on January 1, 2026, after a seven-year run. Navier is married to Heinrey and has children. The temporary divorce Sovieshu planned never becomes temporary again.
Side stories launched on October 29, 2026, on Naver Webtoon’s Daily Plus service. The new episodes cover:
- Navier and Heinrey’s newlywed life after the birth of their twins.
- Stories about supporting characters the main series did not fully explore.
- Alternate-universe “IF” scenarios, including one where Sovieshu’s divorce announcement is revisited and another where Rashta becomes Navier’s maid.
The Live-Action K-Drama: Cast and Release Schedule
The Disney+ and Hulu series is 10 episodes long. The first four episodes arrived on November 3, 2026, one day before the originally planned November 4 premiere. Two new episodes arrive each Wednesday from November 11, with the final pair streaming on November 25.
Main cast:
- Shin Min-a as Navier
- Ju Ji-hoon as Sovieshu
- Lee Jong-suk as Heinrey
- Lee Se-young as Rashta
Director Cho Su-won (credits include Still 17 and Pinocchio) leads the production. Yeoh Geena and Hyun Choong-yeol (The Uncanny Counter) wrote the scripts.
The production scouted castles in France, Germany, and the Czech Republic before settling on Schleissheim Palace outside Munich as its main location. The goal was a European-court look closer to Bridgerton than to Joseon-era palaces.
Shin Min-a said the draw was a familiar story set somewhere rarely seen in Korean series: a European-style fantasy empire of ballrooms and crowns.
The Anime Adaptation Coming in 2027
Crunchyroll announced the anime adaptation at New York Comic Con 2026. The series is set to stream in 2027.
Studio Troyca handles animation. Tetsuya Yanagisawa directs, with Akiko Inoue on series composition and screenplay, Jun Nakai on character design, and Yuki Fukazawa composing the music.
Japanese voice cast:
- Yoko Hikasa as Navier
- Ryohei Kimura as Heinrey
- Tomoaki Maeno as Sovieshu
