Robert Downey Jr. is not just returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as one Doctor Doom. The evidence pointing to multiple versions of Victor von Doom across different realities is stacking up fast, and it changes the scale of the film entirely.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026 , directed by Joe and Anthony Russo. The film was once titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty before Marvel pivoted to Doom as the Multiverse Saga’s central threat. That pivot left a structural question hanging: how does one villain replace an entire council of variants? The answer, according to a growing pile of reports and insider claims, is that Doom gets his own council.
The Council of Kangs Was Supposed to Be the Threat
Kang the Conqueror was introduced as a variant-based villain. Jonathan Majors played multiple versions of Kang, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ended with a Council of Kangs assembling across the multiverse. Marvel parted ways with Majors in December 2023 after a conviction, and the Kang storyline was dismantled.
The replacement was Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has since indicated that Doomsday draws from comic storylines involving colliding universes and timelines.
A Council of Dooms Is Reportedly Taking Shape
Industry insider Daniel Richtman reported that Avengers: Doomsday will feature multiple variants of Doctor Doom from across the multiverse. The report, which circulated widely in November 2025, described the structure as mirroring the Council of Kangs, with one key difference: at least some of the Doom variants are female and played by other actors. The Times of India reported that the film may have taken cues from the scrapped Kang Dynasty concept, replacing the Council of Kangs with a Council of Dooms.
ComicBook.com noted the irony of the setup. In Marvel Comics, it was Reed Richards who formed a Council of Reeds, a group of multiversal Mr. Fantastics working to improve their worlds. Doctor Doom has always defined himself against Reed, so a Council of Dooms is a direct inversion of that idea.
A female Doom variant has been a recurring detail in these reports. Some speculation has even connected the character to Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch, though that remains unverified.
Six Universes Are Reportedly in Play
Scooper Alex Perez stated in a June 2026 Q&A that the film currently spans six universes. The list includes the main MCU (Earth-616) , the Fantastic Four’s reality, the X-Men universe, Doctor Doom’s original universe, Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man universe, and a pocket dimension.
Marvel’s own official synopsis keeps the language broad: Doomsday follows “beloved heroes from three distinct universes as they’re set on a deadly collision course”. The gap between Marvel’s “three” and the reported “six” suggests either that the studio is holding back or that some of those worlds appear only briefly.
The presence of Doom’s original universe on the list matters most for the variant theory. If the film establishes that Victor von Doom comes from a specific reality separate from Earth-616, it creates the narrative space for other Dooms from other realities to exist independently.
Robert Downey Jr. Is Playing Victor von Doom, Not a Tony Stark Variant
A persistent fan concern has been that Downey’s Doom is secretly an evil Tony Stark from another universe. Downey addressed that directly. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he confirmed that he is playing Victor Von Doom, not a Stark variant.
The Russo brothers have reinforced the distinction. In an interview with Empire, Joe and Anthony Russo said there is “no similarity whatsoever” between Doctor Doom and Iron Man in the film. Anthony Russo described the two characters as separate entities, with Doom treated as a character with his own identity.
Joe Russo did acknowledge a thematic symmetry. Endgame Encore, the re-release of Avengers: Endgame with added scenes, included a moment that linked Tony Stark’s earliest suit-building to Victor von Doom molding his own mask. “There is certainly a symmetry at play here,” Joe Russo said. “There is an interesting examination of good and evil at play”.
That symmetry is thematic, not literal. The Russos have been clear that the film is not turning Tony Stark into a villain.
Comic Book Precedent Supports a Doom Multiverse
Marvel Comics has spent decades building out Doctor Doom variants, giving the film a deep well to draw from.
Doom Supreme leads the Masters of the Multiverse, a team of Doom variants from across realities. Doom 2099 is the future version of Victor von Doom, equipped with advanced armor and invisibility technology. Count Otto von Doom, also known as “Otto the Handsome,” comes from the Marvel 1602 reality, a 17th-century version of the character. Joseph Culp played the first live-action Doctor Doom in the unreleased 1994 Fantastic Four film, and CBR noted that Marvel has already referenced that production in The Fantastic Four: First Steps by bringing back its four leads for cameos.
A Parliament of Doom also exists in the comics, described as a group of formerly lobotomized Doom variants. The comic precedent is clear enough that a Council of Dooms on screen would not be an invention from nothing.
A Leaked Plot Outline Ties the Variants to a Larger Plan
Alleged plot details circulating since August 2026 describe a story that begins with an incursion involving the X-Men universe and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man reality. Doctor Doom initially appears to help Reed Richards and other heroes develop a method to separate colliding universes, then betrays them.
The leak claims Doom’s ultimate goal is not simply conquest. He reportedly wants to allow a final incursion to occur so he can rebuild reality to his own design and resurrect his deceased wife and child.
A separate rumor ties the multiversal crisis back to Steve Rogers’ decision to stay in the past with Peggy Carter at the end of Avengers: Endgame. One circulating theory suggests Loki helped the couple relocate to Earth-828, and that the timeline disruption connected to that choice contributed to Doom’s motivations. These claims remain unverified.
The Cast Is Built for a Multiversal Collision
The confirmed cast list reads like a crossover event on its own. Robert Downey Jr. leads as Doctor Doom. Chris Evans returns as Steve Rogers, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, and Anthony Mackie as Captain America. Pedro Pascal plays Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby plays Sue Storm, and Joseph Quinn plays Johnny Storm. Ian McKellen returns as Magneto, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, and James Marsden as Cyclops. Channing Tatum appears as Gambit, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, and Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova.
The ensemble also includes Paul Rudd, Tom Hiddleston, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, Winston Duke, and Tenoch Huerta Mejia.
The Russo brothers explained why Downey was their only choice for Doom. Anthony Russo recalled shooting Tony Stark’s final scene in Endgame on the same stage opposite the Paramount lot where Downey auditioned for Iron Man. “That pickup was very memorable for that reason,” he said. “Audiences are coming to Avengers: Doomsday with a lot of emotional connection to prior experiences within the MCU. We want to honor that and figure out how we are using that value and that emotional investment to go somewhere new”.
Trailers Have Already Shown Doom’s Reach
The August 2026 trailer for Avengers: Doomsday placed Doom at the center of the conflict. A voiceover from Sue Storm describes Victor von Doom as a man who “used to be kind” before losing everything he loved. The trailer shows Doom stopping an attack from Thor using only two fingers and reveals his connection to the X-Men through the Sentinels.
A separate D23 “special look” sparked a theory that the film contains a hidden second Doom. GamesRadar reported two leading interpretations: either Downey’s Doom undergoes a transformation during the film, or the heroic-seeming Doom is killed by an evil variant.
