The island in Hell’s Paradise, known as Shinsenkyo, is not the paradise its name suggests. It is a place filled with terrifying monsters, strange plants, and a group of rulers who are far from human. Viewers of the anime have recently been introduced to these powerful beings, the Lord Tensen, and they have quickly become a major talking point. These are the main antagonists standing between the convicts and their chance at a pardon. For anyone trying to keep up with the series, understanding who these entities are and what they want is key to understanding the entire story.
The Lord Tensen are a group of seven (originally eight) immortal, god-like beings who rule the mysterious island of Kotaku, where the Elixir of Life is rumored to be found. They are not actually deities, but powerful synthetic humans created through experiments with Tao, the energy that flows through all living things. Their main goal is to achieve perfect immortality and complete the Elixir of Life, a mission that involves harvesting humans who land on their shores .
Who (or What) Are the Lord Tensen?
The name Tensen literally translates to “Heavenly Immortal,” which gives a clue as to how they see themselves . They are the highest rank of Sennin (immortals), having mastered all five of the Immortality Training Methods . While they look human and can even change their appearance from male to female, their bodies are actually plant-based . Their life force is tied to an ovule inside them, which acts like a heart. As long as this ovule is not destroyed, a Tensen can survive incredible damage, including regenerating lost limbs .
The Hoko, the original wood people of the island, worshipped the Lord Tensen as gods. They believed the seven members were created when a single great hermit split himself into seven beings after reaching enlightenment. However, this was a fabricated story created by the Tensen themselves to control the Hoko and maintain their position of power . In reality, their origin is much more complex and personal.
The Creation Story and Their True Goal
The story of the Lord Tensen begins with a man named Jofuku, a previous ruler of the island who was researching immortality. His wife, Rien, assisted him in his work. After Jofuku died, Rien took over his research with the desperate goal of bringing him back to life .
To help her, Rien created the first Tensen, named Mei. With Mei’s help, Rien then created six more artificial infants, who would grow up to become the other members of the Lord Tensen. Rien trained them all in the ways of Tao, forming the group we see in the series . Rien’s secret mission, and the ultimate goal of the group, is to collect enough Tao to transfer it to Jofuku’s preserved corpse and resurrect him .
Once the Elixir of Life is perfected, the Lord Tensen plan to release “Paradise Butterflies” across Japan. These butterflies would turn every human into flowers, a process called Arborification. The bloomed humans would then cluster together, allowing the Tensen to harvest even more of the elixir .
The Eight Members of the Lord Tensen
While they act as a group, each Tensen has a distinct personality, appearance, and elemental attribute. Here is a breakdown of the key members viewers need to know.
Rien (The Leader)
Rien is the true ruler of Kotaku, the creator of the other Tensen, and the primary antagonist of the entire series. Her elemental attribute is Earth. As the leader, she is by far the most powerful and is completely focused on her mission to resurrect Jofuku. She is willing to sacrifice everyone on the island, and eventually all of Japan, to achieve this .
Gui Fa
Gui Fa is a member whose elemental attribute is Metal. He is a unique figure because he eventually discovers the truth about Rien’s lies and the real origins of the Tensen. This knowledge causes him to turn against her. He is one of only two Tensen, along with Mei, who survives the events of the story .
Ju Fa
Ju Fa (often presenting as male) is one of the major antagonists and a commander on Kotaku. His elemental attribute is Fire. He is a physically powerful and skilled fighter, known for easily defeating the Aza brothers when they first encountered him. He, along with Tao Fa, was the pair seen by Toma and Chobei in the anime .
Mei (The Defector)
Mei is the first Tensen created by Rien. She disagreed with Rien’s cruel methods, especially the harvesting of humans, and was banished from the group. As punishment, she was reverted to a child-like form. She lives on the island with a talking tree named Hoko, who acts as her father figure. Unlike the others, Mei is not hostile and eventually becomes a crucial ally to Gabimaru and the other convicts, helping them navigate the island’s dangers .
Mu Dan
Mu Dan is another powerful and dangerous member of Lord Tensen. His elemental attribute is Earth. He possesses enormous physical strength and was powerful enough to scare away the skilled kunoichi Yuzuriha with just his presence. During a fight, it was discovered that his stomach area is a weakness that cannot regenerate like the rest of his body .
Ran
Ran is an exceptionally powerful Tensen with a Water elemental attribute. He is a formidable fighter, skilled in a technique called Dล’in, and was so strong that even Gabimaru struggled against him. His true strength is shown when he transforms into his Kishikai form, which is described as more monstrous than the others .
Tao Fa
Tao Fa (often presenting as female) is a co-ruler of Kotaku with a cheerful and playful personality. Her elemental attribute is Wood. However, she is fiercely loyal to the Lord Tensen and becomes terrifying when her comrades are threatened. She is highly skilled in combat, effectively using both her Yin and Yang chi .
Zhu Jin
Zhu Jin, whose elemental attribute is Water, is another commander in the group. When the blind Asaemon Shion first sensed him, he immediately realized they were outmatched. Zhu Jin has complete mastery over his Tao and came very close to killing Gabimaru in their fight, pushing him to his absolute limits .
Their Powers: Why They Are So Hard to Beat
The Lord Tensen are not enemies that can be defeated with ordinary sword skills or ninjutsu. Their power comes from Tao, the mysterious energy that is the source of all life. The Tensen have mastered Tao for centuries, making them incredibly dangerous .
Immortality and Regeneration
The Tensen are functionally immortal. Because they consume Tan (a prototype elixir made from harvested humans), they have lived for centuries. Their plant-based bodies allow them to regenerate from almost any wound. If an arm is cut off, vines with unique flowers will sprout from the stump and reform the limb. The only way to permanently stop them is to destroy the ovule in their tanden (the core in their abdomen) with a Tao that is opposite to their own element .
The Kishikai Form
When pushed to their absolute limit, a Tensen can transform into a monstrous form called Kishikai. This is a last resort that brings together their Yin and Yang forms, resulting in a sudden and massive boost in power. This transformation allows them to easily overwhelm opponents they were struggling against moments before. However, it has a downside. If they take too much damage in this form, they lose all their stored Tao and are reduced to a weakened state, requiring a long time to recover .

Their View of Humans
Living as gods for so long has given the Lord Tensen a sense of absolute superiority over humans. They see people as nothing more than tools or livestock. Their purpose for humans is to harvest their Tao to create more Tan and, ultimately, the final Elixir of Life. They feel no remorse for the deaths they cause, treating the convicts and Asaemon who arrive on the island as sources of sustenance and, sometimes, mere amusement .
As the story progresses, Gabimaru and the others must learn to use Tao themselves if they want any chance of surviving an encounter with these beings. The battle for the Elixir of Life is really a battle against gods who have had centuries to perfect their craft.
