The new Ryan Murphy series about John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette is now officially FX’s most-watched limited series ever on Hulu and Disney+. Since its debut on February 12, the show has pulled in huge numbers and started new conversations about the famous couple.

Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette has streamed more than 25 million hours for its first five episodes alone, according to FX . The audience keeps growing with each new episode. Episode 5 saw a 51% increase in viewers compared to the premiere episode .

What the Show Is About

The series follows the real-life romance between John F. Kennedy Jr., the son of former President John F. Kennedy, and Carolyn Bessette, a fashion publicist at Calvin Klein. Their relationship played out in front of the world throughout the 1990s. The couple married in 1996 and died in a plane crash off Martha’s Vineyard in 1999 .

Unlike other Ryan Murphy projects that focus on crime or horror, this one takes a softer approach. The show recreates 1990s New York and shows how the pair met, fell in love, and dealt with constant media attention . Executive producer Brad Simpson said the team worked hard to get the details right, from the way New York looked back then to capturing famous moments from their life together .

Who Plays the Lead Roles

Paul Anthony Kelly plays John F. Kennedy Jr. in his first major screen role. The Irish actor was cast after a long search. Sarah Pidgeon plays Carolyn Bessette. Murphy said more than a thousand actors tried out for each part .

The rest of the cast includes big names:

  • Naomi Watts as Jackie Kennedy Onassis
  • Grace Gummer as Caroline Kennedy
  • Alessandro Nivola as Calvin Klein
  • Sydney Lemmon as Lauren Bessette, Carolyn’s sister

Why It Blew Up on Social Media

The show has found a massive audience on TikTok. Searches for both JFK Jr. and Bessette grew by over 9100% in the last month . The hashtag #lovestory has generated more than 21 million posts globally .

Younger viewers who did not grow up in the 1990s are discovering the couple for the first time. The series acts as a time capsule of that era, showing the fashion, the music, and the New York City scene that shaped their story .

Real-Life Impact Beyond Streaming

The show’s popularity is showing up in unexpected places. C.O. Bigelow, the New York pharmacy that sells the tortoise shell headband Bessette wore in the series, has sold more of those accessories than in its entire 188-year history .

A restaurant featured in the show is also getting a boost. Panna II, an Indian restaurant in Manhattan’s East Village where the couple had their first date in the series, has seen a 40% jump in reservations .

Controversy and Family Response

Not everyone is happy about the show. Jack Schlossberg, JFK Jr.’s nephew and the only grandson of President John F. Kennedy, spoke out against the series before it aired. He said his family was never consulted about the project and called it “a grotesque way” to profit from his uncle’s memory .

Murphy responded to the criticism by saying, “I thought it was an odd choice to be mad about your relative that you really don’t remember” .

The show also faced some early criticism over casting and costumes when first photos came out last summer. But once episodes started airing, many viewers praised the performances .

Critical Response

Despite the family’s concerns, critics have been mostly positive. The series holds strong scores on review sites. Reviewers have praised the attention to detail in the costumes and set design, which capture the minimalist 1990s aesthetic that Bessette helped popularize .

Some critics have noted that the show focuses on the romance rather than diving deep into Kennedy family history or politics. But others say that is exactly the point. The title promises a love story, and that is what viewers get.

How to Watch

Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on FX. New episodes drop the same night on Hulu in the United States and on Disney+ internationally .

The first three episodes launched together on February 12. The remaining episodes release weekly through March 26 . The series has nine episodes total .

For international viewers, the show ranks as the #1 global title on Disney+ in multiple countries, including France and Monaco . It is currently the top program on Hulu in the United States .

The series was created by Connor Hines. Ryan Murphy executive produces along with Hines, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, and several others. Max Winkler directed the pilot episode .
