Sometimes, the best advice comes from home. That is exactly the lesson at the heart of ‘XO, Kitty’ Season 3. After two seasons of matchmaking and romantic chaos in Seoul, Kitty Song Covey hits a wall in her senior year. She faces a tough breakup and a big life choice about college. To help her get back on track, the show brings back the ultimate big sister: Lara Jean Song Covey.

Lana Condor returns as Lara Jean for the first time in the spin-off series. Her arrival is more than just a fun cameo. For Anna Cathcart, who plays Kitty, this reunion was the emotional anchor of the entire season.

Anna Cathcart on Bringing Back the ‘To All the Boys’ Magic

For fans of the original movies, seeing the Song-Covey sisters share the screen again was a major moment. For Cathcart, filming with Lana Condor felt like no time had passed at all. The actress said working with her felt like no time had passed and that Condor was incredibly supportive.

Cathcart explained that these scenes are vital because they remind the audience who Kitty is at her core. “She’s still a kid,” Cathcart noted. She added that Kitty is “a little sister who has grown up looking at her sisters,” and that dynamic brings out a specific side of Kitty we don’t always see at school.

The reunion happened at a perfect time in the story. Midway through Season 3, Kitty’s life falls apart. She breaks up with Min Ho (Sang Heon Lee) after a misunderstanding, and she fights with her best friend, Q. Showrunner Valentina Garza calls this the moment “the kettle boils over,” which forces Kitty to “send up that flare and call in the big dogs, meaning Lara Jean.”

Why Kitty Needed Her Sister’s Advice Most

The specific scene that Anna Cathcart highlights involves Lara Jean flying to Seoul to help Kitty submit her college application. Kitty feels unsure about leaving Korea for New York University (NYU) because of her feelings for Min Ho.

“We’ve seen now all three sisters battle and struggle with that concept of going to college with a partner, and how you want to make sure you’re making a choice for yourself.” – Anna Cathcart

Cathcart believes it was crucial for Kitty to hear from Lara Jean that “love can be worth the effort and can be worth the risk.” She points out that Lara Jean learned this lesson the hard way with Peter Kavinsky. She tells Kitty that you cannot stop living your life just because the future is uncertain.

Lara Jean’s Own Growth in Season 3

Lara Jean isn’t just there to fix Kitty’s problems. She has her own story happening off-screen. When she arrives, she is going through a rough patch with Peter. She tells Kitty they are “5,000 miles apart literally and emotionally.”

This parallel is intentional. While Lara Jean helps Kitty apply to NYU, Kitty inspires Lara Jean to turn in her book manuscript to her publisher. In a touching goodbye moment, Lara Jean tells Min Ho that Kitty inspired her.

By the final episode, Lara Jean calls Kitty to say that she and Peter are working things out. She tells Kitty, “Love is worth the risk, right?” This full-circle moment brings the wisdom of the ‘To All the Boys’ trilogy into ‘XO, Kitty’.

Where to Watch and Season 3 Recap

The advice works. Kitty decides to apply to NYU, choosing her own future. But she also gets her happy ending. Min Ho writes her a song called “By My Side” and runs through the subway to stop her from leaving without him.

The season ends with Kitty and Min Ho on a plane to Portland to meet her family. They are finally a solid couple.

All episodes of ‘XO, Kitty’ Season 3 are now available to stream worldwide on Netflix.
