The final season of The Boys is now here, and it picks up after one of the most shocking endings in the showโ€™s history. Season 4 ended with Homelander (Antony Starr) basically winning. The evil Supe went from being a celebrity villain to the most powerful person in the country. Meanwhile, Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) became more dangerous than ever, and the rest of the team found themselves trapped or scattered. If you are jumping into Season 5 and need a quick refresher on why everyone is in such a terrible situation, here is everything you need to know about the Season 4 finale.

How Homelander Took Over the Country

The end of Season 4 moved very fast. Homelander and the smartest person in the world, Sister Sage (Susan Heyward) , put a plan into action that changed everything. Their goal was simple: put Homelander in charge of America without holding an election. First, Homelander exposed Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit) as a Supe on live television. He made sure everyone saw her true nature. This caused chaos in the government.

Then, Billy Butcher stepped in. Instead of working with Neuman to stop Homelander , Butcher killed her himself using his new tentacle powers. Neuman was ripped apart right in front of her daughter, Zoey. This made it look like the person running for office was murdered by a vigilante. Sister Sage planned for this. She leaked a report that blamed Robert Singer for Neuman โ€™s death. With Singer out of the way, a new leader named President Calhoun took over.

President Calhoun immediately announced martial law. He deputized superheroes all across the nation. These Supe officers now report directly to Homelander. The posters for Season 5 show Homelander standing in front of the White House and even Big Ben, showing that his power is spreading across the world. One fan on Reddit noted that the finale did a great job of showing how fascism can take over legally, writing, โ€œThey didnโ€™t need to fight an army. They just needed to change the rules.โ€

The Fate of The Boys: Prison and a New Resistance

While Homelander was celebrating his new world order, the good guys were losing badly. Hughie (Jack Quaid) , Motherโ€™s Milk (Laz Alonso) , and Frenchie (Tomer Capone) were captured and locked inside one of Voughtโ€™s new โ€œFreedom Camps.โ€ These camps are designed to hold people who disagree with Homelander. Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) was missing and separated from the team.

Starlight (Erin Moriarty) managed to escape the initial sweep. She is now on the run, trying to start a resistance movement against Homelander โ€™s rule. However, she is doing this without the rest of her team. The group is completely broken. The Season 5 logline explains that Annie is struggling to mount a fight against the overwhelming Supe force.

โ€œItโ€™s Homelanderโ€™s world, completely subject to his erratic, egomaniacal whims. Hughie, Motherโ€™s Milk, and Frenchie are imprisoned in a โ€˜Freedom Camp.โ€™ Annie struggles to mount a resistance against the overwhelming supe force.โ€ – Amazonโ€™s official Season 5 logline.

Butcherโ€™s Dark Turn and the Supe Virus

The biggest threat to both sides is Billy Butcher. The temporary Compound V he kept taking gave him powers, but it is also killing him. A tumor grew in his brain that talks to him. This โ€œJoeโ€ voice makes Butcher more violent and angry. Because Ryan (Cameron Crovetti) accidentally killed Grace Mallory , Butcher stopped caring about saving people.

He grabbed the only vial of the Supe-killing virus left. Butcher does not just want to kill Homelander anymore. He wants to kill every Supe on the planet. This puts him directly against Starlight and Kimiko , who are technically Supes too. Karl Urban described Homelander โ€™s goal for the final season, saying the villain wants to be a god. But Butcher is the only one willing to burn everything down to stop him.

Soldier Boyโ€™s Return and the Post-Credits Scene

The Season 4 finale had a secret scene after the credits that changed everything. President Calhoun was shown keeping Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) in a regulated coma. The hero from the 1980s was not dead. He was just asleep. Soldier Boy is the only person whose power can cancel out other Supesโ€™ abilities. He is also Homelander โ€™s father. Bringing him back means there is now a weapon that can actually hurt Homelander , but it is in the hands of the government that works for Homelander.

Jensen Ackles returns as a series regular for Season 5. Showrunner Eric Kripke has confirmed that the strained father-son relationship between Soldier Boy and Homelander will be a major part of the final episodes. While early reviews of Season 5 suggest the plot moves slowly at first, critics agree that the character moments between these two are some of the strongest in the series.
