The Shrinking season three finale left many viewers wiping their eyes and wondering if the show was over. Nearly every main character said goodbye to someone. Jimmy’s daughter Alice left for college. His mentor Paul moved to Connecticut. His patient Sean moved out of the pool house. Even his best friends Brian and Charlie packed up for Tennessee. The episode wrapped up so neatly that fans could be forgiven for thinking it was the series finale.

But Shrinking is coming back for season four. Apple TV+ renewed the show in January 2026, before season three even started airing. So why did the finale feel so final? Co-creator Bill Lawrence says there is a clear reason for that.

Bill Lawrence Says Season 3 Finale Completes the Original Three-Season Plan

Bill Lawrence explained that when he first pitched Shrinking to Apple, he mapped out a three-season story arc. The first season focused on grief. The second season dealt with forgiveness. The third season was about moving forward. The season three finale, titled “And That’s Our Time,” was always meant to be the conclusion of that specific story.

“We’ve told the story of whether or not Jason Segel’s Jimmy is going to make it through the death of his wife and come out the other side as someone who might be able to find joy and happiness in his life again,” Lawrence told The Hollywood Reporter. “This is the finale of that three-season story.”

The show’s team decided to stick to their original plan even after Apple asked them to continue. Lawrence said they did not want to stretch out the same story just because more episodes were ordered.

“If we came back for a fourth year and Jason Segel’s character was like, ‘I’ve been thinking about it. I’m still super sad about my wife dying,’ you guys would be like, ‘Alright, we’ve heard that,’” Lawrence said.

The Entire Cast Including Harrison Ford Will Return for Season 4

One of the biggest worries for fans came from Paul’s move to Connecticut. Harrison Ford’s character packed up and left California at the end of the finale. Some viewers thought this might mean Ford was leaving the show.

Lawrence shut down that concern immediately. He confirmed that the entire main cast will return for season four, including Harrison Ford.

“I would be insane not to find a way for Harrison Ford to be in the show in perpetuity. He is not disappearing,” Lawrence told Deadline.

The finale included hints about how Paul will stay connected. Alice is attending Wesleyan University in Connecticut, and the episode showed her going to Paul’s house for dinner. Lawrence said this was not an accident.

“Time passage changes a lot of things — as to where people are, where they’re living and how things have progressed. So, yes, Harrison’s back on the show,” Lawrence said.

Season 4 Will Jump Forward in Time and Focus on Fresh Stories

Shrinking has always moved slowly through time. Past seasons covered only a few weeks or months. That will change for season four. Lawrence confirmed that the show will jump ahead by at least a year or two.

This time jump allows the writers to start fresh. Everyone’s lives will look different. Paul will have been living in Connecticut. Alice will be further along in college. Jimmy will have had time to actually move forward from his grief.

“Part of the fun is, if this three story [arc] ends and he’s gonna go try and be with his family in Connecticut, I’m fascinated, along with the writing staff, of what does that look like a couple of years from now?” Lawrence said. “Did it work? Is it hard? Does he miss people? Is he doing better? Is he doing worse?”

Lawrence posted on X before the finale aired, calling season four “a new story with the same cast.” He wrote that the team feels “scary/risky/fun” about the change.

Jimmy’s Romance With Sofi Sets Up His Next Chapter

The season three finale ended with Jimmy finally ready to date again. After Paul flew back to California to give him a push, Jimmy reconnected with Sofi, played by Cobie Smulders. The two shared a breakfast that made it clear Jimmy was ready to try love again.

Lawrence said this moment was important because it shows Jimmy has truly moved through his grief. He is no longer stuck in the sadness of losing his wife.

Jason Segel, who plays Jimmy and co-created the show, explained why this was such a hard step for his character.

“What if you think you already met the love of your life, and she died? You know what I mean? Yeah, you can go out and date some more, but I don’t know, what if the best part happened already?” Segel said.

The finale showed that Jimmy is finally ready to find out if there can be a second best part.

What to Expect From Shrinking Season 4

The new season will look very different from the first three. Lawrence compared it to a new chapter in a book rather than just more pages. The grief story is done. The forgiveness story is done. Now the show will explore what comes after someone heals.

Jessica Williams, who plays Gaby, said filming the finale felt like a celebration. Her character proposed to Derrick (Damon Wayans Jr.) after finding the engagement ring he had bought. Williams said the scene was one of the last things the cast filmed together, and everyone was there.

Brett Goldstein, who co-created the show and played Louis (the driver who killed Jimmy’s wife), took a smaller role in season three. Lawrence explained that Louis‘ story was always meant to be limited. Goldstein is also busy working on his own Amazon series called Escorted.

No official release date has been set for Shrinking season four. Based on past release patterns, early 2027 is a likely window. Seasons one through three are streaming now on Apple TV+.
