The Coupang Play series Absolute Value of Romance dropped episodes 11 and 12 on May 15, and fans are still picking their jaws off the floor. What started as a funny, chaotic show about a high school girl writing BL novels has now taken a serious turn.
The latest episodes show Choi Ji-a (Yoon Hye-rim) in deep trouble with loan sharks. But the real shock comes from Yoon Dong-ju (Kim Dong-gyu), the soft-spoken Korean teacher who suddenly shows a side no one expected.
Ji-a’s Secret Life Gets Exposed
For several episodes, viewers noticed Ji-a missing classes and acting strange. Episode 11 finally explains why. Eui-ju (Kim Hyang-gi) decides to find her friend after she skips school again. She searches around and finds Ji-a working at a restaurant.
Things get worse when two men show up demanding money from Ji-a. She owes them a lot of cash. Woo-su (Cha Hak-yeon) arrives and pays off her debt to get the men to leave. When Eui-ju asks why Ji-a never called the police, she explains that another girl in her situation tried that. The police raided the shelter where they were staying, and everyone had to leave.
Key Detail: Ji-a has been handling this alone for a long time without telling any of her friends.
The Loan Sharks Come Back Stronger
Episode 12 turns even more intense. Jenny returns from her trip and sees Ji-a getting into a car. She wrongly thinks Ji-a is rich and tells the whole group. Eui-ju rushes to tell Woo-su.
But the truth is much darker. The loan sharks changed the interest rates on Ji-a’s debt. Now they want more money, and they take her again. Woo-su runs after them to bring her back. He tries to handle things by asking to see the contract and following proper rules.
The men do not care about rules. They beat him up instead.
Eui-ju Calls for Help
Eui-ju does not stand around waiting. She runs to get Woo-su’s friends for backup. They all rush to the location to save him. This is where the episode delivers its biggest surprise.
Teacher Dong-ju’s Hidden Side Finally Shows
Until now, Yoon Dong-ju has been the kindest, most gentle teacher. He speaks politely to everyone. He never loses his temper. He treats students with respect. He seemed like the last person who would ever throw a punch.
Episode 12 completely destroys that image.
Dong-ju arrives with the others and jumps into the fight. He takes down the loan sharks one by one. During the struggle, his shirt tears open. Everyone sees a large dragon-shaped tattoo on his arm. He quickly hides it under his coat, but the damage is done.
He does not stop at just fighting. Dong-ju forces the loan sharks to get on their knees and apologize before letting them leave.
Choi Go-ya (Kim So-hee) and Eui-ju later talk about what happened. Eui-ju jokes that Dong-ju looks like a former gangster based on his tattoos and fighting skills.
Go-ya and Eui-ju Fix Their Friendship
The friendship between Eui-ju and Go-ya hit a rough patch in earlier episodes. Go-ya felt hurt because Eui-ju stopped sharing her secrets with her. In episode 12, they finally talk it out.
Go-ya runs to hug Eui-ju when she finds her safe. Eui-ju admits she has a crush on Woo-su, not the literature teacher. She says she felt hesitant to share this because she and Go-ya used to make fun of Woo-su together.
Go-ya explains that the hiding hurt more than the secret itself. The two friends patch things up completely.
Go-ya Decides to Change Her Life
After learning about Dong-ju’s past and the dangerous situation he helped solve, Go-ya has a realization. She wants to become successful enough to protect the people she cares about. She decides to step up her studying and work harder in school.
This marks a big change for Go-ya’s character, who has mostly been focused on her feelings for Dong-ju until now.
Eui-ju Finally Gets Ready to Confess
Woo-su might leave for the United States soon for research. Eui-ju learns about this and feels desperate. She does not want him to go without knowing how she feels.
Go-ya pushes her to confess. Eui-ju spends class time preparing what to say. Her heart races the whole time. At the end of episode 12, she finally gathers her courage. She tries to stop Woo-su as he leaves work to tell him everything.
But the episode ends before viewers find out if she actually says the words.
