Keanu Reeves is one of the biggest movie stars in the world. He has played two of the most famous action heroes ever: John Wick, the unstoppable hitman, and Neo, the hero from The Matrix movies. But at home, he is just a regular partner to Alexandra Grant. The 53-year-old visual artist recently gave a rare and open interview about what it is really like to live with a man who turns into these famous characters for work.
Grant spoke at the launch event for her new wine brand, LOVEwine, in Los Angeles on May 28, 2026. During the conversation with People magazine, she did not hold back. She shared the secret to their successful relationship and made a joke that got everyone’s attention: she said she has literally lived with the ghosts of John Wick and Neo.
Mutual Respect Is the Only Rule in Their House
When asked how they make their relationship work, Grant did not talk about grand romantic gestures. Instead, she pointed to something much simpler: respect.
Grant explained that when she is in her art studio painting, Reeves is very careful about giving feedback. She said, “He’s always so appreciative, so he’s always cautious, I think, with feedback, and I would say the same.” She used a funny metaphor to describe how they give each other space. “You want to always be respectful and leave the other person to bake their cake,” she told the reporter. She also admitted that just talking about her love makes her sweat.
For Grant, the relationship is not about controlling each other. It is about allowing the other person to dive deep into their work without interruption. “I would say that there is all the listening in the world,” she said. “We know that we could talk about any problem or challenge or creative idea and talk about it forever if that is needed, and also respect the individual need to dive deep.”

The most interesting part of the interview came when Grant talked about Reeves’ acting process. She reminded everyone that they are both artists who do “projects.” Every project has its own team, its own rules, and a clear beginning, middle, and end.
Then she dropped the line that is now spreading fast across social media. “So we both are people who do projects, and you know, I’ve lived with John Wick, I’ve lived with Neo,” she said.
She was not being literal, of course. She was explaining that when Keanu goes to work, he brings the focus of those characters home with him. But she does not see it as a burden. Because she is a painter, she understands the feeling of being “in the zone.”
“When he’s in a character, for example, I have so much respect for that understanding that this is the middle to the end of a project, right?” she explained. She compared his acting to her painting. “When I’m in painter mode, I am in it. I’m fully in it… painting really is a form of performance too,” she added.
How the Couple First Connected
Reeves and Grant have known each other for a very long time, long before they became a public couple. They first worked together on a book called Ode to Happiness back in 2011. Reeves wrote the words, and Grant did the drawings.
Years later, they started a publishing house together. They kept their romantic relationship completely private for a while. It was only in 2019 that they walked a red carpet together at the LACMA Art + Film Gala, confirming to the world that they were a couple.

Grant is usually very quiet about her private life. However, she is launching a new business called LOVEwine, which is a collaboration between her art project grantLOVE and J Vineyards and Winery. The event in Los Angeles gave her a chance to talk about creativity and partnership.
She says the key to everything is “play.” “I’d say the key to it is the mutual respect and also just like, come on, it’s play, right? It’s play that we get to play creatively,” she told the interviewer. She believes that keeping a sense of fun and treating their work like valuable projects helps them stay happy both as artists and as partners.
