The NBC drama Chicago Fire is losing its longtime creative leader. Andrea Newman, who worked on the series for its entire 14-season run, is stepping down as showrunner. Victor Teran, currently a co-executive producer, will take over the role starting Season 15.
Newman joined Chicago Fire right after the pilot episode as co-executive producer. She moved up to executive producer in Season 6, became co-showrunner alongside series co-creator Derek Haas in 2021, and served as sole showrunner for the past three seasons. Her exit marks the end of a long run with the firefighter drama, which remains one of television’s most-watched scripted shows.
Newmanโs Statement on Her Chicago Fire Exit
The outgoing showrunner shared warm words about her time on the series. She called working on Chicago Fire the highlight of her career and thanked the cast, crew, and production team.
“Working at Chicago Fire, with the absolute best cast and crew in the business, has been the highlight of my career. After 14 years, you really do become a family and working with this group will always feel like home.” – Andrea Newman
Newman also expressed gratitude to Dick Wolf, the creator of the One Chicago franchise, and the team at Wolf Entertainment. Reports indicate her departure is voluntary, though she has not announced specific plans for her next project.
Peter Jankowski Responds to Showrunner Change
Peter Jankowski, executive producer at Wolf Entertainment, released a statement about Newman’s exit and Teran’s promotion. He acknowledged Newman’s impact on the show’s identity and success.
“We’re sad to say goodbye to Andrea. She’s been at the center of the heart and soul of Chicago Fire since the beginning and the show thrived under her watch. We’re grateful for her commitment to the development of the next generation and know the show will be in great hands with Victor taking the reins.” – Peter Jankowski
Who Is Victor Teran, the New Chicago Fire Showrunner?
Victor Teran joins the showrunner role after working on Chicago Fire since Season 10. His background differs from many TV writers โ he started in independent films before moving to television in 2018.
Before Chicago Fire, Teran worked as a production executive and Vice President of Physical Production at Sidney Kimmel Entertainment. He produced, wrote, and directed indie films including “Filly Brown,” which played at the Sundance Dramatic Competition, and “Snap,” which showed at SXSW. His first TV writing job was on Chicago Fire, where he started as a staff writer and moved up to co-executive producer.
What Newman Said About Season 15 Story Changes
Even before announcing her exit, Newman told reporters that Season 15 would bring major shifts to the Chicago Fire Department on the show. She warned that no character is safe from the changes coming next season.
“We’re going to have a lot of turnover. And a lot craziness going on in the CFD from the top, where people are being cut and moved, and everything’s going to get shaken up next season. There will be hellos, and there will be goodbyes.” – Andrea Newman to TVLine
“There’s nobody safe in this shakeup. So next season is going to be about how the s*** really hits the fan once that mandate comes down and how things get shaken up and how our team can hold together as a family while all this craziness is happening around them.” – *Andrea Newman* to TV Insider
