Arshad Warsi has made his position clear on the kind of comedy he wants to be part of. In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, the actor said he enjoys making people laugh but cannot bring himself to sign sex comedies. The statement came as he discussed the return of family entertainers in Bollywood and his 30-year career in the film industry.
The Actor’s Clear Stance
Warsi told HT City that comedy is a difficult craft that very few people can write well. He said he likes comedies and enjoys them, especially when they perform well at the box office. But he drew a firm line on one subgenre.
“I just have an issue with sex comedies. I can’t get myself to do that.”
The actor did not criticise anyone who chooses to work in that space. He only stated his personal preference, which has been consistent for many years.
Why He Avoids Double Meaning Films
This is not the first time Warsi has spoken about his discomfort with adult comedies. In 2013, he told IANS that he prefers “intelligent and smart humour” over sex comedies or over-the-top comedy. He said he was offered films like Kyaa Kool Hai Hum but refused them because he did not want his children to wonder what their father was doing on screen.
In 2017, he told Asian Age that vulgarity was the real issue. He clarified that sex itself was not a problem, but vulgarity was, and he had an issue with that.
Comedies That Made Him a Household Name
Warsi’s career in comedy began with Tere Mere Sapne in 1996, his first film. The role was small but funny and decent, setting the tone for the kind of humour he would later be known for.
His breakout came in 2003 with Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. , where he played Circuit, the loyal sidekick to Sanjay Dutt’s Munna Bhai. The role made him a household name across India. He returned as Circuit in Lage Raho Munna Bhai in 2006.
Around the same time, he joined the Golmaal franchise in 2006, playing Madhav Singh Ghai. The series became one of Bollywood’s most successful comedy franchises. He also starred in the Dhamaal series, beginning in 2007, and led the courtroom comedy Jolly LLB in 2013. These roles built his reputation as one of Hindi cinema’s most reliable comic actors.
A Busy Year With Multiple Releases
Warsi completed 30 years in the film industry in 2026. He marked the occasion with the most releases in a single year of his career. He was part of two big-screen comedies, Welcome To The Jungle and Dhamaal 4, both of which arrived in theatres in the middle of the year. He also led the web series Pritam Aur Pedro, which premiered on JioHotstar on July 3, 2026.
Welcome To The Jungle released on June 26, 2026, and featured a massive ensemble cast led by Akshay Kumar. The film collected Rs 193 crore gross worldwide during its theatrical run.
Dhamaal 4 arrived on July 10, 2026, reuniting Warsi with Ajay Devgn, Riteish Deshmukh and Jaaved Jaaferi. The film later became available on Netflix for global audiences.
Serious Roles Beyond Comedy
Warsi has often said that being typecast as a comedian limited his growth as an artist. In September 2026, he told PTI that comedy typecasting restricted his opportunities but he still considers himself lucky to have stepped outside the genre. He pointed to Ghamasaan, a gritty crime drama where he played a dacoit named Maharaj. The film premiered on ZEE5 on September 11, 2026, and also starred Pratik Gandhi.
He also headlined the dark comedy Jeevan Bheema Yojana, which released in cinemas worldwide on September 4, 2026. The film featured Warsi in a double role for the first time in his career, playing two contrasting characters named Jeevan and Bheema. Sanjeeda Shaikh and Vijay Raaz were part of the cast.
What Is Coming Next
Warsi will close 2026 with a small but important role in King, the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer directed by Siddharth Anand. The film is scheduled to release in theatres on December 24, 2026. Warsi said he agreed to the part because of his fondness for the Khan family. He previously worked with Shah Rukh’s son Aryan Khan on the series The Bads of Bollywood* and said he could not say no when Shah Rukh Khan called him for King.
Golmaal 5 is also on his slate. Rohit Shetty officially announced the release date of January 8, 2027. The film will bring back Ajay Devgn as Gopal, Arshad Warsi as Madhav, along with Tusshar Kapoor, Kunal Kemmu, Shreyas Talpade and Akshay Kumar. The announcement was made with a motion poster in September 2026.

Warsi is not alone in turning down adult comedies. Divyenndu Sharma, known for his role in Mirzapur, said in an interview with PTI that sex comedies were an “amazingly horrible phase” in Bollywood. He revealed that he was offered good money for such films but refused because he knew he could do something else. He said refusing those offers was not easy because it affected people’s egos, but he stood by his choice to avoid being typecast.
The sex comedy genre had its peak in Bollywood between 2002 and 2016, with films like Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai, Masti, Kyaa Kool Hai Hum, No Entry and Grand Masti. By 2016, trade analysts were already noting that the genre was losing steam. Warsi’s refusal to join that wave reflects a choice he made from the start of his career.
