Fans of the Bosch universe have reason to celebrate, as Prime Video has officially renewed the hit spinoff Ballard for a second season. The renewal news, announced on October 6, 2025, does more than just guarantee more cases for Detective Renée Ballard; it breaks a frustrating pattern for the franchise’s iconic star, Titus Welliver.

For years, Welliver’s television projects, despite being critically praised and having dedicated fanbases, were frequently cancelled. From the abrupt end of Bosch: Legacy to his short-lived role as Lex Luthor in Titans, which was cancelled soon after his character’s introduction, the actor seemed to be followed by a streak of bad luck. The renewal of Ballard finally shatters that disappointing cycle.

The Disappointing Streak of Cancellations

Titus Welliver is best known for his role as LAPD detective Harry Bosch, a character he played for a decade across the original Bosch series and its sequel, Bosch: Legacy. While many believed Bosch: Legacy was cancelled when it was reported in September 2024 that its third season would be the last, it was just one in a series of shows featuring Welliver that ended abruptly.

One of the most notable examples was his involvement in the fourth season of Titans, where he played Superman’s arch-nemesis, Lex Luthor. Fans appreciated his interpretation of the character, but his role was very short. The character died in the closing minutes of the season four premiere, and the series itself was cancelled soon after. This pattern made the future of any show he was involved with feel uncertain, which is why the renewal of Ballard is such significant news for his supporters.

Ballard’s Successful First Season

The renewal decision was driven by the show’s outstanding performance. The detective drama, which stars Maggie Q as the titular LAPD detective Renée Ballard, debuted on Prime Video in July 2025. It was met with an incredibly positive response from both critics and audiences.

The series was a massive hit with viewers, accumulating 2.5 billion minutes streamed in the United States in July alone. It also spent several weeks in Nielsen’s weekly Top 10 charts for streaming originals, peaking at the number four spot. This strong audience resonance and critical acclaim made a second season almost inevitable.

Lauren Lancaster, Head of US SVOD TV Development and Series – Co-Productions for Amazon MGM Studios, confirmed the renewal, stating the global audience response has been “phenomenal.”

“We are excited to share that the ‘Bosch’ universe will continue to expand with a second season of ‘Ballard’ for our global Prime Video customers,” said Lancaster. “The audience response to ‘Ballard’ has been phenomenal, resonating with audiences worldwide thanks to its gripping storytelling and outstanding performances from Maggie Q and the entire cast. We can’t wait for fans to experience everything Season Two has in store.”

The Creative Team Reacts

The show’s executive producers and showrunners, Kendall Sherwood and Michael Alaimo, also expressed their gratitude for the chance to continue telling Ballard’s story. They highlighted the pleasure of diving deeper into the characters and the world of the show.

“We’re so grateful to have the chance to continue Ballard’s story,” said Sherwood and Alaimo. “It’s a pleasure to dive deeper into these characters and this world, and seeing audiences resonate with their stories is incredibly rewarding. We get to work with such a talented, dedicated team who bring this universe to life – and we’re thrilled to be able to continue doing just that.”

Michael Connelly, the author of the Ballard novels and an executive producer on the series, added his thanks to the fans and praised Maggie Q’s performance.

“It’s a great privilege to have my characters brought to life on screen season after season, and it’s thanks to the fans continuing to tune in that we’re able to do so,” Connelly said. “I’m especially grateful to Maggie Q for embodying Renee so perfectly, honoring the character as we take her into the next stage of her journey.”

What This Means for Titus Welliver and the Bosch Universe

While Ballard focuses on Maggie Q’s character, Titus Welliver guest-starred in Season 1, reprising his role as the retired detective Harry Bosch. His appearance was a welcome sight for fans of the larger Bosch universe. Although his involvement in Season 2 has not been officially confirmed, his cameo in the first season and his central role in the franchise make it highly expected that he will appear again.

The renewal also brings positive attention to Welliver’s other current project, the MGM+ crime drama The Westies. With Ballard breaking his streak of cancellations, fans are now more hopeful that The Westies will also be successful enough to earn a second season.

The first season of Ballard is available to stream in its entirety on Prime Video. Cameras have not yet started rolling on the second season, but with the renewal secured, production is expected to begin soon.
