Ben McKenzie is set to appear alongside his real-life wife Morena Baccarin in the Season 2 premiere of CBS’s hit drama series “Sheriff Country.” The network announced on Monday, August 24, that the former “Gotham” and “The O.C.” star will guest star as Sheriff Wade, a neighboring sheriff called in to assist Baccarin’s character, Sheriff Mickey Fox. The episode, titled “Cyclone,” airs on Friday, October 9 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.
This marks the first time the married couple will share the screen on the “Fire Country” spinoff series. Baccarin, 47, leads the show as Sheriff Mickey Fox, a character she originally played in two episodes of “Fire Country” before the spinoff was ordered to series.
Ben McKenzie’s Role as Sheriff Wade
McKenzie, 47, will appear in the Season 2 premiere as Sheriff Wade, a neighboring sheriff who arrives to help Sheriff Mickey Fox. The character comes with his own set of secrets, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the premiere episode.

The casting carries a special personal connection. McKenzie and Baccarin previously worked together on the Fox series “Gotham,” where they played characters Jim Gordon and Dr. Leslie Thompkins. Their on-screen reunion in “Sheriff Country” gives fans a chance to see the real-life couple share scenes once again.
McKenzie had previously hinted at a possible appearance on the show. In an April interview, he told Us Weekly that he could see a scenario where he would appear on the “Fire Country” spinoff. He also shared that he enjoys watching the show weekly to see Baccarin’s performance.

Season 2 Premiere Episode “Cyclone”
The Season 2 premiere, titled “Cyclone,” picks up after the dramatic Season 1 finale. The official logline from CBS reveals that Sheriff Mickey Fox struggles to process a shocking revelation about her family while racing to save a troubled young woman. The young woman’s descent into a dangerous criminal operation uncovers a growing threat to all of Edgewater.
Season 1 ended with Mickey learning that her love interest, DEA agent Alec, was corrupt. She worked with Boone and Santos to trap him. In the final moments, Santos tried to recruit Mickey to work with her and her father Wes to take down a Bulgarian cartel. That was when Wes revealed that the DEA boss is actually Mickey’s mother.
These family revelations will be explored further in Season 2. The premiere episode will also feature a crossover of sorts, as McKenzie’s Sheriff Wade comes to assist Mickey.
First Look and Social Media Announcement
Baccarin shared the exciting news on Instagram with a fun video showing her and McKenzie in matching sheriff’s uniforms. She captioned the post with a playful message: “There’s a new sheriff in town”.
In the video, Baccarin walks into a room wearing her character’s sheriff uniform and looks over with exasperation. The camera then shows McKenzie sitting in a chair wearing a similar uniform. The two actors lip-sync lines from “Family Guy,” with Baccarin saying “Oh, c***,” and McKenzie replying “Well, one of us is gonna have to change”. The post has received over 5,000 likes on Instagram.
CBS has also released first-look photos from the episode, showing the couple together on set.
Sheriff Country’s Success and Season 2 Renewal
“Sheriff Country” has become a solid performer for CBS since its debut. The network renewed the show for Season 2 in December 2025, less than two months after it premiered. CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach called the show an “instant hit”.
According to a press release, “Sheriff Country” has averaged 7.6 million viewers and is “consistently a time period winner” for Friday nights at 8 p.m.. The show was ordered to series in 2024 for the 2025-26 season. CBS has ordered the second season for the 2026-27 TV season.
The series is a spinoff of the popular CBS drama “Fire Country”. It follows Sheriff Mickey Fox, who is the stepsister of Cal Fire’s division chief Sharon Leone, played by Diane Farr. The town of Edgewater was originally introduced in Season 1 of “Fire Country” in 2022. By Season 2, a backdoor pilot set up the world of “Sheriff Country,” centered around Sharon’s estranged sister Mickey.
Season 2 Cast and Production Details
The main cast returns for Season 2. Alongside Baccarin, the season stars Matt Lauria as Nathan Boone, W. Earl Brown as Wes Fox, Christopher Gorham as Travis Fraley, and Michele Weaver as Cassidy Cunningham. Amanda Arcuri and Ian Quinlan have been promoted to series regulars for Season 2. Arcuri plays Mickey’s daughter Skye Fraley, and Quinlan plays Hank Iglesias.
Showrunner Matt Lopez has been teasing the new season for months. Production for Season 2 takes place in Toronto, Canada. The show is currently on hiatus with production dates scheduled from May 2026 through October 2026.
