I really got to know our hero dog. I would have to have dog treats with me, and in the middle of the scene, say it’s an emotional scene, then the dog would start wandering off. I’d have to break and go, ‘Uber, here, buddy. Here you go,’ and then fall right back into the emotion of it all.”
Three of Uber’s real-life offspring — Seeka, Ryker, and Hondo — also worked on the film, playing younger versions of Odin in flashback scenes.
Fans Fear for Odin’s Fate in Heart of the Beast
The bond between Pitt’s character and his dog has struck a chord with audiences. Trailers for Heart of the Beast show Odin protecting James from wolves, helping him navigate dangerous terrain, and staying by his side through brutal conditions. Fans can relax. Producer Richard Raymond addressed the worry head-on in a social media post. “Everybody loves a dog. It’s about the only thing the whole world agrees on. So let me put your mind at ease right now: the dog does not die. You’re welcome,” Raymond wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Director David Ayer also confirmed the news. Speaking with GQ, Ayer said, “The one spoiler I’ll forward right now is, don’t worry, the dog lives.”
Raymond also shared his personal connection to the project. He recalled working as a runner at Pinewood Studios in the 1990s, making tea and coffee for Pitt on the set of Interview with the Vampire. “To now be one of the producers on what may be one of his very best films… I don’t have a word for it other than: pinch me,” he wrote.
Brad Pitt Calls Heart of the Beast a Love Story
Pitt has spoken about what drew him to the film. “When I first picked up the script for this movie, I read it and it just really, really moved me. That bond between human and dog, dog and human, it’s something quite incredible,” Pitt said in a featurette.
He described the film as more than a survival story. “This is on its surface a survival movie but underneath its surface it’s a love story. The experience cemented what I know to be true about our relationship with dogs, and their relationship with us. It’s that intense loyalty and their love is unconditional. We are less alone in the world, because of our dogs.”
Ayer echoed that sentiment. “James and Odin never give up on each other. They would sacrifice themselves in a heartbeat for the other,” the director said. J.K. Simmons, who stars as Watkins, added, “I was absolutely absorbed by these characters. There’s a deep, deep heart in this movie.”
Heart of the Beast Release Date and Global Theatrical Rollout
Heart of the Beast is scheduled for release exclusively in theaters on September 25, 2026. Paramount Pictures is handling the global rollout. The film will open in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India, and other international markets on the same date. The film has also been selected to screen at the San Sebastian Film Festival, which runs from September 18 to 26, 2026. Both Pitt and Ayer are expected to attend the festival to present the film, marking Pitt’s return to San Sebastian after 17 years.
The cast includes Brad Pitt as James Belmont, J.K. Simmons as Watkins, and Anna Lambe in an undisclosed role. The film is written by Cameron Alexander and produced by Olivia Hamilton, Marty Bowen, David Ayer, and Brad Pitt. Damien Chazelle serves as an executive producer.
