The first teaser for the new Cape Fear series has arrived, and it brings together some of Hollywood’s biggest names. Javier Bardem stars as the menacing Max Cady, with Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson playing the couple whose lives get turned upside down. The show comes from executive producers Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg, who worked together on the classic 1991 film. The ten-episode limited series will debut on Apple TV+ starting June 5, 2026.
The teaser shows Bardem taking on the role that Robert De Niro made famous in Scorsese’s 1991 version. It sets up a tense story where a convicted killer gets out of prison and goes after the lawyers who helped put him away. The footage gives viewers a look at how this new version updates the classic thriller for modern audiences.
The Story Behind Cape Fear and Its Long History
Cape Fear has roots going back to John D. MacDonald‘s 1957 novel The Executioners. The first movie adaptation came in 1962, with Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum in the lead roles. Scorsese’s 1991 remake became a major hit, earning Robert De Niro and Juliette Lewis Oscar nominations for their performances.
The new series draws from all three sources. Showrunner Nick Antosca, known for Channel Zero and Hannibal, created this version. The story follows Anna (Adams) and Tom Bowden (Wilson), two attorneys whose past comes back to haunt them when Max Cady (Bardem) gets released from prison. Cady believes the Bowdens are responsible for his time behind bars and wants payback.
The official description reads:
“A storm is coming for happily married attorneys Anna and Tom Bowden when Max Cady, the notorious killer they are responsible for putting behind bars, is let out of prison — and he wants vengeance.”
The series explores how Cady slowly tears apart the Bowdens’ world. He stalks them, watches their every move, and uses his knowledge of the legal system to torment them from within the law.
Who’s Who in the Cape Fear Cast
Javier Bardem takes on the role of Max Cady. The Oscar winner previously played terrifying characters in No Country for Old Men and Skyfall. The teaser shows Bardem laughing and tracking the Bowden family, giving viewers a taste of his take on the character.
Amy Adams, a six-time Oscar nominee, plays Anna Bowden. She brings her experience from roles in Arrival, American Hustle, and Sharp Objects to this psychological thriller. Patrick Wilson, known for The Conjuring and Insidious franchises, plays her husband Tom Bowden.
The supporting cast includes Joe Anders, Lily Collias, Malia Pyles, and CCH Pounder. Adams and Bardem also serve as executive producers on the series.
How Scorsese and Spielberg Came Together for This Project
The connection between Scorsese and Spielberg goes back to the early 1990s. Spielberg originally planned to direct Cape Fear while Scorsese was attached to Schindler’s List. The two directors traded projects. Scorsese directed the 1991 film, and Spielberg made Schindler’s List, which won him his first Best Director Oscar.
Now, more than three decades later, both filmmakers are back as executive producers on this new version. Morten Tyldum, who directed The Imitation Game, helms the pilot episode and also serves as an executive producer.
When and Where to Watch Cape Fear
Cape Fear will premiere on Apple TV+ on Friday, June 5, 2026. The streaming service will release the first two episodes on that date. After that, new episodes will arrive every Friday. The season will run through July 31, 2026, giving viewers ten episodes of this limited series.
For audiences in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, India, and other regions with Apple TV+ access, the series will be available on the same global release schedule.
The teaser has already created significant buzz online since its release on March 31, 2026. Fans of the original films are eager to see how Bardem handles the role of Max Cady, and the involvement of Scorsese and Spielberg has raised expectations for the series.

What Makes This Version Different
The series format allows the story to expand beyond what the movies could do. With ten episodes, the show can dig deeper into the characters and the psychological games Cady plays with the Bowden family. The teaser suggests the series will explore the consequences of the lawyers’ past actions and question how far someone will go to protect their family.
The show comes from UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, and Amblin Television. Antosca produces alongside Alex Hedlund for Eat The Cat, and Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey for Amblin Television.
