The new CBS 2026 fall schedule has arrived, and one popular comedy is nowhere to be found. Ghosts, the network’s hit show about a couple and the spirits living in their bed-and-breakfast, will not return for its next season this fall. Instead, the network pushed Season 6 to spring 2027. This change has made many viewers nervous about what it means for the show’s future. Some fans are asking if this delay signals a shorter season or even the beginning of the end for the beloved series.

Why ‘Ghosts’ Is Missing From the Fall Lineup

CBS released its official schedule for fall 2026 on April 15, 2026. The Thursday night slot that Ghosts usually fills at 8:30 p.m. now belongs to a new show. The network scheduled a fresh family comedy called Eternally Yours in that spot. This new series comes from the same creators as Ghosts and follows a vampire family trying to fit in with their human neighbors.

The network also moved two other popular shows to spring 2027. Matlock and NCIS: Sydney will join Ghosts in the midseason lineup. A new drama called Einstein, starring Matthew Gray Gubler, will also debut at that time. This means Ghosts Season 6 will not start until early 2027, more than a full year after Season 5 began airing in October 2025.

Fans React to the Schedule Shake-Up

The news spread quickly on social media, and viewers did not hold back their concerns. On Reddit, fans shared their confusion and worry about the long wait. One person wrote a short but direct response to the news:

“That’s not a good sign for Ghosts….”

Others questioned the logic behind moving one of CBS’s most reliable comedies. Another fan expressed frustration about the timing and how it affects the story:

“How does this at all make sense??? ghosts and matlock are some of its top shows??? how with this affect whatever cliffhanger is supposed to end the season????”

The worry about a shorter season also came up quickly. Many fans know that shows moved to midseason often receive fewer episodes. One user asked directly:

“Does this mean the season will be shorter than usual?”

However, not every fan sees this as bad news. Some viewers think the network trusts the show enough to survive a schedule change. One fan offered a different view:

“It probably means they have enough confidence in both ghosts and matlock that they don’t think a spring premiere will affect them too much…”

Another fan agreed, saying the move likely has more to do with making room for new shows than any problem with Ghosts itself.

Good News: A Full 22-Episode Season Is Still Coming

Despite the fears, the news is not all bad. Ghosts Season 6 has a confirmed full-season order of 22 episodes. The show’s renewal for both Season 5 and Season 6 came back in February 2025. That means CBS already committed to two full seasons of the show more than a year ago.

The spring 2027 move will not cut the episode count. Fans will still get a complete season when the show returns. The change only affects when the season starts, not how many episodes the show produces.

Holiday Specials Will Fill the Gap This Fall

Ghosts fans will not have to wait until 2027 to see their favorite spirits. CBS plans to air two one-hour specials during the fall 2026 season. One special will focus on Halloween, and the other will be a Ghostmas holiday episode. These specials will give viewers a chance to check in with the Woodstone crew while waiting for Season 6.

The network has not announced exact dates for these specials yet. But they will likely air in October and December 2026. This is a smart move by CBS to keep the show’s audience engaged during the long break.

Where ‘Ghosts’ Season 5 Stands Right Now

The current season, Ghosts Season 5, is still airing new episodes. The season will end with a special one-hour finale on May 21, 2026. The final two episodes are titled “Up the Creek” and “Across the Pond.” These episodes will show Sam (Rose McIver) and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) trying to save Woodstone from a serious financial problem.

Recent episodes have set up this conflict. Sam recently learned the B&B has major money issues. On top of that, Trevor’s (Asher Grodman) finance job ended, removing their safety net. The ghosts also failed to pay taxes, putting the whole property in danger. The Season 5 finale will likely end on a cliffhanger, which will make the wait for Season 6 feel even longer.

What This Means for Viewers

For most viewers, the biggest impact is simply the waiting game. The show will not return for new seasons until next year. But the network’s decision to order a full 22-episode season shows confidence in the show’s staying power. Ghosts remains one of CBS’s top comedies, and the network wants to keep it around.

The new show Eternally Yours will have a chance to find its own audience in the Thursday night slot. If it performs well, CBS may have found another hit. If not, Ghosts could easily move back to its old spot in the future. For now, fans can enjoy the remaining episodes of Season 5 and look forward to the holiday specials coming later this year.
