The Paramedics at the Center of the Action

Hanako Greensmith played Violet Mikami, the Paramedic in Charge. In this episode, Violet faced a terrifying situation when she and Novak got trapped in a basement bunker. A man named Ryan tricked them by saying his pregnant girlfriend needed help. Once they went downstairs, he pulled a gun and held them captive.

Jocelyn Hudon played Lyla Novak, Violet’s partner. Their friendship faced strain before the kidnapping because Violet hid that she had a brief romance with firefighter Sal Vasquez. Novak felt hurt that Violet kept this secret. The dangerous situation forced both women to work together and rebuild trust.

“I think the only thing that she’s really felt committed to and comfortable with committing to is like a friendship with Novak, and I think that’s really what she has needed this whole time,” **Hanako Greensmith** told Us Weekly about her character Violet’s priorities.

Sal Vasquez Takes Action

Brandon Larracuente played firefighter Sal Vasquez, who joined the team earlier in Season 14. His character had a one-night stand with Violet, which created tension when Novak developed feelings for him. In episode 18, Vasquez noticed Violet and Novak had been gone too long. He worked with police to track them down. His knowledge of small details, like how Violet bandages wounds and the gum Novak chews, helped him find the basement where the women were held.

The building owner also made a brief appearance when he called about a noise complaint, giving Violet a chance to get medical supplies.

What Happened During the Episode

The story began with Violet giving a presentation about how trust between partners saves lives. Novak felt bothered because Violet had hidden her hookup with Vasquez. Before they could finish talking, a man ran up asking for help with his pregnant girlfriend.

Once Violet and Novak went down to the basement, they found Sarah tied to a bed. The man pulled a gun and took both paramedics hostage. Sarah had gestational diabetes and needed insulin. Ryan took Novak upstairs to get the medication while Violet stayed with Sarah.

Violet tried to escape but found the door locked. She found a tool to cut zip ties but hid it under the mattress. Meanwhile, Vasquez grew worried at the firehouse. He called dispatch and learned the women had not answered radio checks. He got their last location and went to find them.

Back in the basement, Sarah went into labor. Violet realized the baby was in distress. She asked for Versed, a sedative, saying it would lower cortisol levels. She planned to use it on Ryan when she got the chance.

Vasquez arrived with police. He recognized Novak’s gum in the sink and the bandage style on Ryan’s arm. Police broke down the door just as Violet and Novak had their own plan ready to stop Ryan. Everyone survived, and the women had a honest talk afterward in the ambulance, promising to always be truthful with each other.

“It was really wonderful opportunity to just showcase the time and commitment, not just the characters, but us actors have put into making this story feel full 3D and lived out,” Greensmith told TV Insider about filming the intense episode.

Filming the Hostage Episode

Jocelyn Hudon shared that she and Greensmith spent eight days filming inside a bunker set. They stayed on the floor for up to 14 hours each day. Hudon called it a fun experience because the episode felt different from other episodes this season. Greensmith compared it to making a movie rather than a regular TV episode because the story stayed intense the whole time without breaks.

The two actresses said their real-life friendship helped their on-screen chemistry feel natural. Hudon explained that their characters have a yin and yang dynamic, with Novak bringing lightness and Violet bringing seriousness to their partnership.
