Christopher Nolan, Tom Holland, and Matt Damon took a break from the premiere of The Odyssey in Mumbai to enjoy a cup of chai at a legendary local cafe.
The team behind The Odyssey made a surprise stop at Olympia Coffee House in Colaba, one of Mumbai’s oldest and most famous eateries. The trio sat down for some hot chai and bun maska, a beloved local snack, hours before walking the red carpet for the film’s India premiere.
Universal Pictures India shared pictures of the three stars enjoying their tea break on social media. The post read, “Quick tea stop before The Odyssey Mumbai Premiere. A Big night awaits, but chai comes first!”. The photos quickly spread across the internet, showing the Hollywood heavyweights relaxing at the cafe’s marble-topped tables.
A Spontaneous Stop at a Century-Old Mumbai Cafe
The visit to Olympia Coffee House was not part of the official schedule. The team took an unexpected detour before heading to the premiere venue. The cafe, established in 1918, has been a fixture in Colaba for over a century. It is known for its old-world charm, marble-topped tables, and wooden counters that have remained largely unchanged through the decades.
The cafe manager, Inayat Maredia, shared that the team’s preparations started quietly hours before the stars arrived. The advance team had been waiting outside the cafe since around 2:30 pm. However, the staff had no idea they were about to serve some of the biggest names in Hollywood.
“We had no idea that the people they were waiting for were such big personalities. Later, when we searched online, we realised that Tom was the actor who plays Spider-Man.”
Nolan, Holland, and Damon finally entered the cafe around 6 pm. They ordered chai, bun maska, and light snacks. The visit was brief, lasting no more than 10 to 15 minutes, as a large crowd started gathering outside. Bodyguards and police were present to manage the situation.
Embracing Local Flavours
The trio’s choice to visit Olympia Coffee House showed their willingness to embrace local culture. Bun maska, a soft bread bun generously spread with butter, is a classic Mumbai snack traditionally paired with hot, sweet, milky tea. This simple yet iconic combination has been a favourite among Mumbaikars for generations.
The stars were seen enjoying their tea and snacks, with Holland, Damon, and Nolan raising their glasses of chai in a toast. The relaxed atmosphere at the cafe was a sharp contrast to the glitz and glamour of the red carpet that awaited them later that evening.
The visit also highlighted the growing connection between Hollywood and India. Mumbai has become an important stop for global film promotions, and The Odyssey premiere marked the first time a Christopher Nolan film had an official premiere in India.
Fan Reactions Pour In
As soon as pictures from the chai break surfaced online, fans flooded social media with their reactions. Many loved seeing the Hollywood stars enjoying a simple Indian tradition.
“Before the red carpet, comes the chai break.”
Another fan wrote, “GOAT blessed the City,” referring to Nolan’s legendary status in the film industry. One user commented, “Stawp they look so cute,” capturing the charm of the moment.
A fan also made a playful connection to Tom Holland’s role as Spider-Man. “Tom having tea reminded me of Spiderman India Pavitr Prabhakar having tea with his aunt maya (may) in Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse,” they said. Some fans wondered why Robert Pattinson, who also stars in the film, did not join the trio in India.
The chai break became a talking point among fans, who appreciated the stars’ down-to-earth nature and their willingness to experience local culture.
The Odyssey Mumbai Premiere
After their tea break, Nolan, Holland, and Damon headed to the grand premiere of The Odyssey at PVR ICON IMAX, Phoenix Palladium in Mumbai. The event marked the film’s first public screening anywhere in the world.
The premiere was a star-studded affair. The trio was joined by Emma Thomas, Nolan’s wife and a producer on the film. Several Bollywood stars, including Dimple Kapadia, who appeared in Nolan’s Tenet, also attended the event.
Addressing the audience after the screening, Nolan spoke about the significance of premiering one of his films in India for the first time. He mentioned that he had long wanted to bring a film to India. Plans to premiere Tenet in Mumbai were disrupted by the pandemic, making The Odyssey premiere a long-awaited milestone.
“We actually intended to come with Tenet originally, because we filmed here in Mumbai, and then because of the pandemic, we weren’t able to. And so finally we’re actually able to (do so with The Odyssey). It’s a thrill.”
Matt Damon thanked the audience for their response, noting that the Mumbai screening was the first time The Odyssey had been shown to a public audience. Tom Holland also expressed his gratitude for the warmth and enthusiasm of Indian audiences.
Holland described the film as a “love letter to cinema” and spoke about the emotional depth of the characters.
“You’ll get to feel the heartache that Matt portrays so well. You’ll get to feel the longing of Anne Hathaway’s Penelope… People will watch this movie and feel a sense of connection to Chris’ work and our work that feels really unique and profound.”
