Amazon Prime Video dropped its big-budget spy series Citadel season 2 on May 6, 2026. The show stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden as elite spies whose lives got turned upside down after a mission went very wrong. Two spin-offs, Citadel: Diana and Citadel: Honey Bunny, came out in 2024. But now the original story continues. Here is a simple breakdown of what happened in Season 1 before you watch the new episodes.
How Citadel Fell and the Agents Lost Their Memories
The first season opened with a high-speed mission on a train in the Italian Alps. Agents Mason Kane (Richard Madden) and Nadia Sinh (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) tried to stop a bad guy from delivering dangerous cargo. But everything was a trap. A rival spy group called Manticore had planned the whole thing.
A massive explosion destroyed the train. Both agents somehow survived, but their own organization, Citadel, wiped their memories to protect them. This process is called “backstop”. Eight years passed. Mason lived as Kyle Conroy, a simple family man with a wife named Abby and a daughter. He had no idea he was ever a spy. Nadia lived under a fake name in Spain with only bits and pieces of her past left.
Bernard Orlick (Stanley Tucci), the last remaining Citadel handler, found Mason after his DNA showed up in a database. Bernard pulled Mason back into the spy world. Manticore was still hunting for something called the X Case, a device that held nuclear codes and secrets about every Citadel agent.
Mason and Nadia’s Complicated Past
When Mason found Nadia in Spain, she didn’t remember him at first. He gave her a serum that brought her memories back. That is when everything got messy. Nadia remembered that she and Mason had a secret daughter named Asha. She left Citadel years ago to protect the child and raised her alone.
Nadia also held a grudge against Mason. Years earlier, Mason had blamed their friend Celeste for stealing the X Case, even though he knew Nadia was the one who destroyed it. Celeste got her memory wiped because of that lie. Nadia could not fully trust Mason after what he did.
The Final Mission to Save Their Daughter
In the season finale, Dahlia (Lesley Manville), the main villain from Manticore, kidnapped Asha. She forced Mason and Nadia to steal five nuclear cores from a Russian submarine in exchange for their daughter’s safety. The agents pulled off the mission, got the cores, and rescued Asha without giving Manticore what they wanted.
Dahlia faked her own death by blowing up her house so Manticore would not punish her for failing. Bernard survived being captured earlier. Carter, another Citadel agent, helped the team throughout the mission. By the end, Nadia reunited with her daughter, and things seemed okay on the surface.

The Shocking Truth About the Mole
The biggest twist came at the very end. Mason found a backup vial that restored all his lost memories. That is when he discovered the truth. He was the mole who betrayed Citadel eight years ago.
Dahlia is actually Mason’s mother. She convinced him that Citadel killed his father in a bombing that went after the wrong target. Mason believed his mother and gave her a list of every Citadel agent. That information let Manticore destroy the agency.
To make things worse, Mason’s wife Abby is actually Celeste, the same woman he got memory-wiped years ago. She has no idea who she really is. At the end of Season 1, Mason lied to everyone and said his memories did not come back. But he remembers everything. He now has to live with the guilt of destroying the organization he worked for while pretending to be a normal husband.
