The new version of Lord of the Flies dropped on Netflix on May 4, 2026, and viewers are talking about the hard-to-watch death scenes. The four-episode series, which first came out on BBC iPlayer in February 2026, stays very close to William Golding’s famous book from 1954. But the show makes some changes to how key characters die, which has fans comparing the new version to older ones.
The show follows a group of British schoolboys stuck on a deserted island after their plane crashes. No adults make it out alive. What starts as an attempt to stay orderly slowly turns into violence and total chaos. By the end of the series, several boys lose their lives. Some deaths happen by accident. Others are cold-blooded killings.
Simon Dies First After Being Mistaken for the Beast
Simon, played by Ike Talbut, is the first main character to die in the series. His death happens in Episode 3, which is titled after his character. Simon is the only boy who understands that the “beast” everyone fears is not real. He climbs the mountain and finds the truth. The beast is actually the rotting body of a fighter pilot attached to a parachute.
Simon runs down the mountain to tell the other boys the good news. But he arrives at the worst possible moment. Jack and his hunters are in the middle of a wild, fear-filled dance during a storm. When Simon stumbles into their circle, the boys mistake him for the beast. They attack him with their bare hands, teeth, and spears. They do not stop until he is dead.
Talbut, the actor who plays Simon, shared what his character represents.
“I think all of the boys really represent an aspect of the human condition. Jack obviously represents some of the darker aspects. Ralph is the charismatic leader, but I think Simon really represents civility and kindness.”
Simon’s death marks the moment when the boys lose all sense of right and wrong.
Piggy’s Death in the Show Is Different From the Book
Piggy, played by David McKenna, is the brains of the group. He wears glasses and always tries to use logic and reason to solve problems. His death comes in the final episode, but the show changed how it happens compared to the original novel.
In William Golding’s book, Roger pushes a boulder off a ledge. The rock hits Piggy. He falls onto rocks below and dies right away. The ocean washes his body away while the other boys watch in shock.
In the Netflix version, Roger still throws the rock. The boulder hits Piggy in the head. The conch shell, which represents order and rules, shatters on the beach. But Piggy does not die at that moment. Ralph takes him into the jungle and tries to care for his wounds. Piggy’s head injuries are too severe. He dies later from his wounds. Ralph buries him in the woods instead of leaving his body for the sea.
David McKenna, who plays Piggy, spoke about why this story still matters today.
“We’ve advanced socially or we’ve advanced technologically, but those issues are still there. I would say put 40 boys on a tropical island today, and the same thing would probably happen, sadly.”
Piggy’s death signals the complete end of any rules on the island.
The Boy With the Birthmark Dies in the First Fire
The smallest boy on the island, known only as the boy with the birthmark, is the first child to die. This happens in Episode 2. The boys try to build a large signal fire using dry wood, hoping a passing ship will see the smoke and rescue them.
But the fire spreads too quickly. It grows out of control and races down the mountain. The little boy with the birthmark on his face cannot get away in time. He burns to death in the flames.
What makes his death even sadder is what happens after. At the end of the story, Ralph lists the boys who are still alive. He does not mention the boy with the birthmark. The character is forgotten completely, showing how little value the group placed on the youngest and weakest members.
The Dead Pilot and Other Casualties on the Island
Besides the boys who die, several other bodies appear throughout the series. In Episode 1, Ralph and Piggy come across a dead pilot near the crash site. This is the same pilot whose body later becomes the “beast” that terrifies everyone.
A fighter pilot is also found dead on the mountain in Episode 3. His parachute gets stuck in the trees. The wind blows his body around, making it look alive from far away. This is the body Simon discovers right before he is killed.
The series also shows in flashbacks that three cabin crew members were on the plane. They likely died when the plane hit the ground, and their bodies were never found.

The Boys Who Make It Out Alive
Not everyone dies. Most of the boys survive and get rescued at the end. Ralph, played by Winston Sawyers, is running for his life when a naval officer finds him. Jack and his hunters had set the entire island on fire trying to smoke Ralph out of hiding.
Jack, played by Lox Pratt, survives along with his hunters. Roger, Sam, Eric, and the rest of the boys also make it off the island. The only two boys who do not return home are Simon and Piggy.
When the naval officer arrives, he sees the burning island and the dirty, wild-looking children. He criticizes Ralph for not keeping better track of how many boys needed to be saved. The officer does not understand what really happened on that island.
The cast includes over 30 young actors, many of whom had never acted professionally before. The main group features Winston Sawyers as Ralph, Lox Pratt as Jack, David McKenna as Piggy, and Ike Talbut as Simon. Thomas Connor plays Roger, while Noah and Cassius Flemyng play the twins Sam and Eric.
Director Marc Munden explained what it was like working with so many children.
“A lot of the time it was utter chaos and we tried to film some of that chaos as well. It can’t help but be chaos when you’ve got 36 boys under the age of 12.”
The show filmed over five months from July to December 2024 in the Malay Archipelago. The crew took daily speedboat trips to empty islands and worked around monsoons and extreme heat.
Lord of the Flies is a limited series. There will not be a Season 2 because the show covers the entire book from start to finish.
