Dan Levy is back with a new TV series, and his famous father could not be more proud. The Schitt’s Creek creator and star recently opened up about how his dad, comedy legend Eugene Levy, reacted to his latest Netflix project, the crime comedy Big Mistakes. The 79-year-old actor made a special trip to support his son.
The show arrived on Netflix on April 9, 2026. It follows two siblings who get pulled into the dangerous world of organized crime. For Dan Levy, getting his father’s approval meant everything. The elder Levy flew all the way from Canada just to be at the New York City premiere.
“He came all the way from Canada to support,” Dan Levy told PEOPLE magazine at the red carpet event on April 6. “They’re already quoting lines from it, and they’re very excited to watch it again. So, that’s all I could ask for.”
Eugene Levy’s Trip to Support His Son at the ‘Big Mistakes’ Premiere
Eugene Levy did not miss this important night for his son. The Schitt’s Creek star traveled from his home in Canada to New York City. He wanted to be there for the launch of Big Mistakes. This marks Dan Levy‘s first major TV project since the beloved family comedy ended.
The red carpet event happened on April 6, 2026. Dan Levy, who is 42 years old, smiled as he talked about his parents. Both have already watched the entire series. They loved it so much that they started repeating their favorite funny lines from the show.
This family support is nothing new. The Levys have always been close. Eugene Levy and his son worked together for six seasons on Schitt’s Creek. That show won multiple Emmy awards. Now, the father is happy to watch from the audience as his son leads a new series.
What ‘Big Mistakes’ Is About and Its Sibling Inspiration
Big Mistakes is a dark comedy with eight episodes. Dan Levy plays Nicky, and Taylor Ortega plays Morgan. They are two very clumsy siblings who cannot seem to do anything right. After a small theft goes wrong, a dangerous criminal blackmails them. They are forced to work for the mob.
The show takes a simple family squabble and puts it against big crime scenes. Dan Levy said the idea came from his own life. He grew up arguing with his real sister, Sarah Levy. Fans of Schitt’s Creek will remember Sarah as the sweet waitress Twyla Sands.
“We’re in a far better place now that we’re older and wiser,” Dan explained. “But … anyone who has a sibling, I think, will recognize themselves in the show. And it was really about authenticating the experience of that sibling dynamic and just exacerbating all of the bickering in the light of, like, intense criminal activity.”
Dan Levy wants people from loud families to feel seen. The show does not try to be perfect. Instead, it shows how brothers and sisters fight. It also shows how they come together when things get really bad.

Dan Levy’s Return to TV After ‘Schitt’s Creek’
Making Big Mistakes was a big step for Dan Levy. After Schitt’s Creek ended, he waited to find the right project. He did not want to make just any show. He wanted a project that gave him the same good feelings he had on the old set.
“I have to say, when I left Schitt’s, I really wanted to make sure that the next thing I did in TV gave me that same sense of inspiration and passion and excitement and love and affection for the people I was working with — and it did,” Dan shared.
He praised the cast and crew for working very hard. Dan Levy said he simply set the table, and the actors “ate.” He feels very proud of what they built together. The actor also hopes to tell this story for many more seasons.
Eugene Levy has always been a guiding light for his son. Years ago, Dan Levy faced awkward questions in high school because of his dad’s movie American Pie. Classmates thought the raunchy comedy was about Dan’s life. Now, the roles have reversed. The father gets to watch the son shine in his own comedy.
