Director Danny Boyle has addressed the widespread rumors about Cillian Murphy’s potential appearance as a zombie in 28 Years Later, the long-awaited sequel to his 2002 film 28 Days Later. The director, who is known for his fresh approach to filmmaking, discussed how the upcoming sequel takes a different route from the original, offering a unique perspective on the zombie genre.

Danny Boyle on the Zombie Genre

Boyle revealed that 28 Years Later explores the long-term effects of a zombie outbreak within the United Kingdom. Unlike its predecessor, which focused on the immediate aftermath of the outbreak, the sequel examines what life is like nearly three decades after the infection was contained. This unique focus allows Boyle and his team to bring a new angle to the genre, one that goes beyond the typical zombie narrative.

“It was a wholly different approach,” Boyle said in an interview with Empire magazine. “It was about what that 28 years gives you.” The film explores the unique consequences of the outbreak, offering a fresh perspective for fans of the franchise.

The Confusion Surrounding Cillian Murphy

A recent trailer for 28 Years Later sparked confusion among fans, as many believed that they spotted Murphy, who played the iconic role of Jim in 28 Days Later, appearing as a zombie in the background. However, Boyle cleared up the misunderstanding, confirming that the figure in question was not Murphy but an actor named Angus Neill.

Boyle shared his initial reaction to the trailer, admitting that he hadn’t anticipated the public’s reaction. “I showed my girlfriend the trailer, and she said, ‘People will think that’s Cillian.’ I said, ‘Don’t be silly,’” Boyle said. “I ignored her.” He added with a chuckle, “So I’ve eaten a bit of humble pie since.”

Despite the trailer confusion, Cillian Murphy is not featured in 28 Years Later, though his connection to the project remains strong. Andrew MacDonald, the film’s producer, revealed that Murphy was originally considered for the film, and he is still involved with the project in a different capacity.

Murphy’s Role in the Sequel and Future Projects

Although Murphy does not appear in 28 Years Later, MacDonald expressed hope that the actor would be involved in future installments of the franchise. “On this, we wanted him to be involved, and he wanted to be involved,” MacDonald explained. “He is not in the first film, but I’m hoping there will be some Jim somewhere along the line.”

Murphy’s involvement in the franchise is not entirely limited to acting. He currently serves as an executive producer for the 28 Years Later trilogy, a role that allows him to influence the direction of the project. This indicates that Murphy’s connection to the series is far from over, even if he is not appearing on screen in the first film.

Cast for the Sequel

28 Years Later introduces an impressive new cast, including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, Jodie Comer, and Jack O’Connell. This film marks the first installment of a planned trilogy, with the second movie, titled 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, scheduled to be directed by Nia DaCosta.
