Netflix’s three-part documentary Death of the Pastor’s Wife arrived on the streaming platform on August 26, 2026, and quickly pulled millions of viewers into the complicated story of Mica Miller, a 30-year-old worship leader from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The series has since gathered more than 19 million views and sits at the top of Netflix’s English TV chart. For many, the documentary is their first real look at Mica’s life and the events that led to her death on April 27, 2024 at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina.
But for Alexx Altman-Devilbiss, Mica was not a headline. She was a friend she met at Solid Rock Church back in 2010, long before pastors, marriages, and federal charges entered the picture. In a new interview on the Criminally Obsessed podcast, Alexx shared what she saw, what she missed, and what still haunts her about the friend she lost.
Who Was Mica Miller Before the Headlines
Alexx met Mica when Alexx was around 19 and Mica was still in high school. They became close at Solid Rock Church, where Mica’s love for music and worship was impossible to ignore. Alexx remembers her as someone who lit up a room, not someone destined for a scandal.
“She just always had a big heart, very bubbly, um, very excited about being in church and worship, and so yeah, that’s just who she was as a person. She always had a really big heart.”
Mica’s first marriage was to Jeremy Deas, and the wedding was officiated by none other than John Paul “JP” Miller, the pastor of their church. Alexx recalls that period as a happy time for the young couple, with Mica deeply involved in the church’s music program.
“She loved being on stage, and you could tell when she sang. That was like her happy place.”
After Mica and Jeremy married, Alexx noticed JP spending more and more time with them. Mica started helping JP with his children, and the connection between them grew slowly. Looking back, Alexx says she never imagined where it would lead.
How a Mentorship Became an Affair
The closeness between Mica and JP did not stay hidden forever. JP’s first wife, Ally, reportedly found messages between the two expressing their love for each other. JP sent an apology to the church, and there was talk of him stepping away from preaching. But Alexx says he ultimately stayed in his role.
Alexx did not learn about the affair from Mica directly. Her husband heard it from a church elder first. When Alexx finally spoke to Mica, the conversation was emotional. Mica cried and expressed regret, treating the relationship as something she never expected to become serious.
What troubled Alexx even more was how the church community responded. She noticed that people directed their anger at Mica, not at JP.
“People were very angry with her, and I thought it was weird because no one seemed to be angry with JP.”
“And not a lot of people that I can remember left the church right away. It was very odd to me that people were willing to follow a pastor that does that.”
Alexx and her husband eventually decided to leave Solid Rock Church. The atmosphere felt too negative and conflicted for them to stay. She left before Mica and JP’s relationship developed further, later learning that JP continued pursuing Mica and that the two eventually married.
The Death That Left More Questions Than Answers
Years passed, and Alexx lost touch with Mica. When her husband told her that Mica had died, Alexx first thought it might have been an accident. She never imagined Mica would go to an isolated area and take her own life.
“Never ever would I have thought like she would have done that and gone to, like, this swamp area and decided to commit suicide. Like, it just never would have dawned on me that she would do that.”
Alexx is careful not to claim she knows what happened. She does not say someone killed Mica or that another person was present. She admits she cannot know what Mica was thinking because they were no longer close. But she also says she could never picture Mica ending her own life.
The 911 call has been especially hard for Alexx. She listened to only the beginning because hearing Mica’s distressed voice felt completely different from the friend she remembered.
“That’s not the Mica that I know.”
Watching Death of the Pastor’s Wife was also painful for Alexx, particularly the parts featuring Mica’s voice and singing. Music was such a big part of who Mica was, and seeing it used in the documentary felt deeply upsetting to her.

Where the Case Stands Today
Mica Miller’s death was officially ruled a suicide by the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office. JP Miller has denied any involvement in her death and has not been charged in connection with it. However, he is facing a separate federal case.
A federal grand jury indicted JP Miller in December 2025 on charges of cyberstalking and making false statements to investigators. Prosecutors allege that between November 2022 and Mica’s death in April 2024, JP Miller posted a nude photograph of Mica online without her consent, placed tracking devices on her vehicle, contacted her more than 50 times in one day, interfered with her finances, and damaged her tires. He has pleaded not guilty, and his federal trial is currently scheduled for October 2026.
The documentary has renewed public attention on the case. Protesters have gathered outside Mercy Church, where JP Miller now serves, demanding answers and accountability.
“We just want the truth. We want justice for her. We just. We want there to be accountability,” said Melissa Caison, a protester.
Alexx Altman-Devilbiss does not shy away from Mica’s own mistakes. She openly acknowledges the affair but separates that from what she believes Mica later experienced. If she could speak to Mica again, Alexx says she would tell her that she loved her regardless of everything that happened.
