Denzel Washington recently revealed that he had to apologize to director Ryan Coogler after inadvertently disclosing details about the upcoming Black Panther 3. During an interview on the Variety Awards Circuit podcast, Washington explained how he let the cat out of the bag about his potential involvement in the next installment of the Black Panther franchise.
Washington’s Apology
In the interview, Washington shared how he immediately called Coogler to make amends for his premature comment. “I called him the other day. I forgot what it was about — no, I called him to apologize,” he said. “That’s right. I called him. I said, ‘I’m sorry, man.’ He’s like, ‘No, man, it’s all good.’”
Washington further explained that during their FaceTime conversation, Coogler was accompanied by his partner, and they were busy with editing work. Despite Washington’s mistake, Coogler reassured him that there were no hard feelings.
Details on Black Panther 3
The actor made headlines last month after revealing in an interview with Australia’s Today show that he was involved in the next Black Panther film. He mentioned, “I’ve been talking with Steve McQueen about a film… After that, Ryan Coogler’s writing a part for me in the next Black Panther.” However, he also clarified that he hasn’t received a formal update about the movie and expressed uncertainty about the project’s specifics.
“I don’t know what he’s got cooking for me,” Washington admitted. “I love Ryan, because he’s like, he won’t say things. ‘You know what I’m saying?’ That’s how he talks to me.” Washington joked about Coogler’s cryptic way of discussing the film, adding, “I’m like, ‘No, I don’t know what you’re saying, Ryan. Say it!’”
Despite not having full details about the script or his role, Washington expressed his excitement for the project, emphasizing his trust in Coogler and his willingness to participate in whatever role the director envisions.
Washington’s Upcoming Projects
Washington, who is also starring in Gladiator II, shared more about his future endeavors during the podcast. Aside from Black Panther 3, he discussed his collaboration with filmmaker Steve McQueen and his plans to work on adaptations of Othello and King Lear. However, Washington hinted that his time in the film industry is coming to an end. “After that, I’m going to retire,” he said, referring to the projects he has lined up.
In addition, Washington confirmed his involvement in overseeing the adaptation of August Wilson’s play Joe Turner’s Come and Gone. He also mentioned his ongoing work on Spike Lee’s reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low, a project that he has yet to see in its final form.
Washington’s Future in Film
Despite the retirement talk, Washington made it clear that he isn’t stepping away from acting anytime soon. “Not tomorrow,” he said, noting that although retirement is inevitable, it’s not an immediate concern. Washington’s long-standing career and diverse range of projects suggest that he has plenty more to contribute to the industry before his eventual retirement.
