Disney is going back to Wonderland. The latest film in the Descendants franchise, titled Descendants: Wicked Wonderland, will premiere on Thursday, July 16 on the Disney Channel and arrive on Disney+ the next day, July 17, 2026. The studio also dropped a new teaser trailer and confirmed that actress and comedian Awkwafina has joined the cast as Chessy the Cat.

The film is the fifth entry in the popular musical fantasy franchise and serves as a direct sequel to Descendants: The Rise of Red, which came out in 2024.

Changing the Past Created a New Villain

Kylie Cantrall returns as Red, the daughter of the Queen of Hearts. Malia Baker is back as Chloe, the daughter of Cinderella. At the end of the last movie, the duo traveled back in time to stop the Queen of Hearts from becoming a villain. They also saved Cinderella.

At the start of Wicked Wonderland, things look perfect. The Queen of Hearts is now nice. Cinderella is safe. But the teaser trailer shows a big problem. Leonardo Nam returns as Maddox Hatter, and he warns in the trailer: โ€œWhen you alter the fabric of time, there can be some unpredictable consequences.โ€

Those consequences are serious. Maddox Hatter has become the new villain. He captures the Queen of Hearts. Red and Chloe have to go back to Wonderland to save her.

Alexandro Byrd plays Luis, the son of Luisa Madrigal from Encanto. Kiara Romero plays Hazel, the daughter of Captain Hook. Brendon Tremblay plays Max, the son of Maddox Hatter.

Other returning cast members include Melanie Paxson as Fairy Godmother, Paolo Montalban as King Charming, Rita Ora as the Queen of Hearts, and Brandy as Cinderella. New faces include Joel Oulette as Robbie Hood, Zavien Garrett as Felix Facilier, and Ryan McEwen and Dayton Paradis as the Smee twins, Squirmy and Squeaky.

Awkwafina Joins the Franchise

The biggest casting news is Awkwafina voicing Chessy the Cat. This marks her first role in the Descendants universe. Fans know her from movies like The Farewell, Crazy Rich Asians, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. She also voiced Scuttle in the live-action The Little Mermaid. Her addition brings a major star to the supporting cast.

New Music and a Coming Concert Tour

The Descendants: Wicked Wonderland soundtrack will come out on July 17 through Walt Disney Records. The franchise is known for its big musical numbers. The teaser trailer shows a clip of one new song, where Red and Chloe look around and ask, โ€œWhat Have We Done?โ€
