The wait is almost over for Star Wars fans who have been eager to see the return of one of the galaxy’s most dangerous former Sith Lords. Disney and Lucasfilm have just dropped a brand new official trailer for the upcoming animated series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, and it gives audiences a never-before-seen look at the fan-favorite villain.

With less than a month to go before its premiere on Disney+, the new footage reveals more about Maul’s quest for power, the enemies who are hunting him, and a stunning new animation style that has already caught the attention of longtime viewers.

What Is Maul – Shadow Lord About

Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord picks up after the events of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The story follows Maul as he tries to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet called Janix, a world that remains untouched by the growing power of the Empire. This is not the same Darth Maul who first appeared in The Phantom Menace. He is no longer a Sith apprentice serving a master. Instead, he is working alone, trying to gain control over the underworld while also dealing with the fact that his greatest enemies, the Jedi, are now nearly extinct.

During his time on Janix, Maul meets a young and disillusioned Jedi Padawan named Devon Izara. She may become the new apprentice he needs to carry out his plans for revenge. The series will follow their relationship as Maul tries to shape her into something useful for his cause.

The show is created by Dave Filoni, who has been the driving force behind so much of Star Wars animation. It is based on the characters and universe created by George Lucas. The series will have 10 episodes in total, releasing in batches of two every week.

Sam Witwer Returns as the Voice of Maul

One of the most important pieces of news for fans is that Sam Witwer is back to voice Maul. Witwer has played the character for more than 15 years, first in The Clone Wars and later in Star Wars Rebels and other projects. His deep understanding of Maul’s pain, anger, and moments of twisted wisdom has made his version of the character a favorite among viewers.

At Star Wars Celebration Japan, Witwer spoke about what fans can expect from the new series. He explained that Maul was trained from birth to hate and destroy Jedi. But now that the Jedi Order is gone, the character is forced to ask himself some hard questions about what he is supposed to do next.

The creative team at Lucasfilm also values Witwer’s input. Executive producer Athena Portillo said that Witwer reviews the scripts and helps keep the character true to everything that has come before. Brad Rau, the supervising director, added that Witwer brings so much depth to Maul and has been a great partner in making sure the character stays real for the audience.

The New Trailer Shows Stunning Animation and Familiar Faces

The latest trailer for Maul – Shadow Lord gives viewers a much clearer picture of what the final show will look like. The animation style is a big step forward for Lucasfilm. It blends classic filmmaking techniques with a brushstroke-on-glass look that gives the whole series a darker and more artistic feel.

Fans have been quick to praise the visuals online. On YouTube, one comment with over 26,000 likes called the animation absolutely gorgeous. Another fan wrote that the upgraded clone wars style animation looks so insane, a comment that has received more than 12,000 likes.

The trailer also teases the return of several characters from other Star Wars shows. Marrok, the Inquisitor who first appeared in the live-action Ahsoka series, shows up to confront Maul. The two share a brief but intense lightsaber fight in the footage. Marrok can be heard saying, The Emperor wants you dead, confirming that the Empire is sending its agents after Maul.

For those who watched Ahsoka, Marrok’s appearance raises interesting questions. In that show, Marrok was killed by Ahsoka Tano, and green smoke came out of his armor when he fell. That detail led many to believe he was not a real person but something brought back to life by the Nightsisters’ magic. His presence in Maul – Shadow Lord may explain more about who or what he really was before his mission in the Ahsoka series.

Other characters making appearances include Mandalorians, bounty hunters, and other Force users. The trailer ends with Maul igniting his lightsaber as the famous Duel of the Fates music plays in the background, a moment that is sure to give longtime fans chills.

Meet the Voice Cast

The voice cast for Maul – Shadow Lord is packed with talented actors:

  • Sam Witwer as Maul
  • Gideon Adlon as Devon Izara
  • Wagner Moura as Brander Lawson
  • Richard Ayoade as Two-Boots
  • Dennis Haysbert as Master Eeko-Dio-Daki

  • Charlie Bushnell as Rylee Lawson
  • Vanessa Marshall as Rook Kast
  • David W. Collins as Spybot
  • A.J. LoCascio as Marrok

Wagner Moura, who was recently nominated for an Oscar, brings his talents to the role of Brander Lawson. Richard Ayoade voices a character named Two-Boots, and the two of them will also appear in a Marvel Comics prequel series set on Janix that begins in March.

When and Where to Watch

Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord will premiere exclusively on Disney+ on April 6, 2026.

The release schedule is designed to build excitement week by week. The first two episodes will drop on premiere day. After that, two new episodes will arrive every week. The final two episodes are scheduled to release on May the 4th, which is also known around the world as Star Wars Day.

This schedule means the whole series will be available to watch in just five weeks. For fans in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, India, and around the globe, new episodes will be available at the usual times each week on the platform.

A New Direction for Star Wars Animation

Maul – Shadow Lord represents something a little different for Lucasfilm Animation. In the past, shows like The Bad Batch ran for longer seasons with 15 or 16 episodes. The new series is shorter and more focused, with just 10 episodes that tell one continuous story.

Executive producer Matt Michnovetz described the show as highly serialized and very connected all the way through. He also called it an action-packed thrill ride with the speed of a roller coaster. The team wanted to honor the old serials that inspired George Lucas when he first created Star Wars, and they believe Maul is the perfect character to drive that kind of story.

The animation itself also pushes the boundaries of what Lucasfilm has done before. Joel Aron, the director of cinematography, lighting, and VFX, went back to practical methods to capture brush strokes by painting them on glass and then filming them. The team also returned to creating matte paintings on canvas to give the backgrounds more depth and texture.

Athena Portillo explained that every show brings new challenges, but this one raised the bar. The goal was to make the body movements and facial expressions more fluid than in previous work, giving the main characters stronger performances.

Fan Reactions to the New Trailer

Since the new trailer dropped, fans have been sharing their excitement online. Many are happy that the footage did not spoil too much of the story while still showing enough to build anticipation.

One fan wrote on social media, Needless to say this exceeded my astronomically high expectations. Animated Star Wars is the gift that keeps on giving. Cant wait for the story and beyond thankful it wasnt completely spoiled in this masterpiece of a trailer.

Another fan simply stated, I speak for all of us when I say we WILL be watching this.

The animation quality has been a major talking point. On Reddit, a user posted in a trailer thread, Its been a long time since Ive been so impressed by such a high technical level, especially the use of colors and lighting.

Not every reaction has been positive. A small number of commenters expressed concerns about the direction of the show. But the overwhelming majority of feedback shows that fans are eager to see Maul return to the screen in what looks like his most personal story yet.

A Story About a Villain Without a Purpose

One of the most interesting parts of Maul – Shadow Lord is the emotional place where the character finds himself. For his entire life, Maul was trained to hate and kill Jedi. He killed many of them during the Clone Wars. But now the Jedi are gone, and he has to figure out how he feels about that.

This is not the kind of story that Star Wars usually tells about its villains. Maul has always been driven by anger and a desire for revenge. But without the Jedi to focus that anger on, he is left searching for a new reason to exist. The new series will explore that struggle and show how he tries to build something of his own in the criminal underworld.

The setting of Janix also plays a big role in the story. The planet is described as one part Gotham City and one part Metropolis, but completely Star Wars. It is a city built inside a crater, with a working democracy and local law enforcement that does a good job keeping the peace. That makes it a rich place for gangsters and criminals to operate, as long as they follow certain rules. Maul’s arrival is sure to upset that balance.

At the same time, the Empire is slowly spreading its control across the galaxy. The Inquisitors are hunting any remaining Force users, and they have their eyes on Maul. The series will show how different groups understand the Empire in different ways, and how Maul fits into that changing galaxy.
