The wait for Euphoria season 3 is almost over. The HBO drama returns after a four-year break. But the new season carries a heavy weight. The show lost two beloved cast members since the last episode aired.
At the season 3 premiere in Los Angeles on April 7, 2026, creator Sam Levinson spoke openly about honoring Angus Cloud and Eric Dane. Both actors passed away before the new episodes were finished. Levinson dedicated the final season to their memory.
Sam Levinson Breaks Silence on Show’s Delay and Losses
The TCL Chinese Theatre hosted the star-studded event. Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, and Hunter Schafer walked the red carpet. But the mood turned serious when Levinson took the microphone for a five-minute speech.
He explained why season 3 took so long to arrive. The writers and actors strikes played a part. Scheduling the busy cast was also difficult. But Levinson said the real reason was deeper.
“Some people ask why it took so long between season 2 and 3. There were obvious factors. But the real time was in trying to figure out how to find a way to pay respect to those who we lost.” – Sam Levinson
He then dedicated the new season to three people. Angus Cloud, Eric Dane, and producer Kevin Turen (who passed away in November 2023). The audience watched as Levinson shared his personal pain.
Creator Opens Up About Fighting to Keep Angus Cloud Clean
Angus Cloud died in July 2023 at age 25. The actor, who played soft-hearted drug dealer Fezco, passed away from an accidental drug overdose. His death shocked fans and the cast.
Levinson did not hide his emotions at the premiere.
“When Angus died it was tough. I loved him deeply and I fought hard to keep him clean.” – Sam Levinson
The creator reflected on what Cloud’s death taught him about life. He spoke about the opioid epidemic. In 2023, around 105,000 people died from drug overdoses in the United States. Nearly 92% of opioid overdose deaths involved fentanyl.
Cloud had been open about his mental health and addiction struggles. Levinson decided to keep Fezco alive in the show’s world. He explained that characters talk to Fez on the phone in season 3.
“I thought if I couldn’t keep him alive in life then maybe within this show that I can control and keep him alive there. The whole thing was to honour him.” – Sam Levinson
Eric Dane’s Final Performance After ALS Battle
Eric Dane played Cal Jacobs, the troubled father of Nate Jacobs. He passed away on February 19, 2026, at age 53. Dane had been diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). Despite his illness, he finished filming his scenes for season 3.
Dane appears in all eight episodes of the new season. The season 3 trailer, released on March 30, gave fans a preview of his final performance.
In his last interview on Netflix’s “Famous Last Words,” Dane talked about his character.
“Cal and I are very similar in that we know what it’s like to lead a double life. I’ve had experience with that with my battle with drugs and alcohol. I know what it is like to not have my insides match my outside.” – Eric Dane
Levinson shared a statement after Dane’s death. He said working with Dane was “an honor” and being his friend was “a gift.” At the premiere, he asked the audience to remember Dane, Cloud, and Turen.
“The Rebbe says, ‘The only way to see great light is to pass through great darkness.’ Well, it feels good to be on the other side.” – Sam Levinson
Season 3 Premiere Details and Star Attendance
The April 7 premiere brought out the full cast. Zendaya wore a backless black gown. Sydney Sweeney chose a white mini-skirt with a long trail. Maude Apatow, Alexa Demie, and Chloe Cherry also attended.
Jacob Elordi and Colman Domingo joined the group on the red carpet. Levinson suited up for the emotional evening. The event marked the first time many cast members had gathered since the losses.
How the Show Handles Cloud’s Absence in the Story
Levinson made a specific choice about Fezco’s fate. Unlike the Season 2 finale which left things unclear, Fez does not appear on screen. But the character remains alive in the story. Other characters talk to him on phone calls throughout the season.
This approach let the show honor Cloud without recasting the role. It also avoided killing off the character off-screen. Fans will hear about Fez’s life through conversations with Rue and others.
