Drawn Together (originally titled Enfrentados: Marfil) arrived on Prime Video on September 9, 2026, and its ending has left viewers with plenty of questions. The Spanish romantic thriller, based on Mercedes Ron’s 2019 novel Marfil, follows a wealthy heiress who falls for the bodyguard hired to protect her after a mysterious kidnapping. What begins as a tense bodyguard romance takes a dark turn involving FBI secrets, organised crime, and a betrayal that leaves both main characters in grave danger. The film stars Ester Expósito and Hugo Diego García, and a sequel titled Drawn Apart has already been filmed.
What Happens in Drawn Together
Marfil Cortés (Ester Expósito) is the daughter of Alejandro Cortés, a powerful Spanish businessman based in New York. Her life is turned upside down when she is kidnapped during a run in Central Park. Strangely, her captors never demand a ransom, and she is released without explanation. Worried for her safety, Alejandro hires Sebastián Moore (Hugo Diego García), a highly trained bodyguard, to watch over her. Marfil resents having someone monitor her every move, but she eventually asks Sebastián to teach her self-defence so she never feels helpless again. Their training sessions spark an undeniable attraction, and the professional relationship turns romantic. However, both are hiding secrets about who they really are.
The Truth About Sebastián and the Kidnapping
The film’s final act reveals that Sebastián is not a private bodyguard — he is an undercover FBI agent. He and his partner Ray (Joaquín Ferreira) orchestrated Marfil’s initial kidnapping as part of an operation to pressure her father. Alejandro is not simply a businessman; he is a mobster involved in drug trafficking and a long-running war with Kozel, a dangerous Russian crime figure. The FBI cut a deal with Alejandro: he would provide information in exchange for protection for his family. Sebastián was placed close to Marfil to monitor the family from the inside while the authorities worked to track down Kozel.
Marfil’s Second Kidnapping and Alejandro’s Fate
After learning the truth, Marfil returns to New York with Sebastián and Ray. She receives a text from her father asking her to meet him in Times Square. Before they part ways, Sebastián gives her a necklace containing a hidden microphone and a code word, “ébano”, which she can use to signal danger. At Times Square, Logan, Alejandro’s trusted right-hand man, meets Marfil instead and leads her to an underground parking garage. Inside a waiting car is not her father but Kozel — who is revealed to be Iván, the charming man Marfil had kissed at a horse track in Spain. Kozel knows about the necklace and throws it out of the window after Marfil says the code word. Sebastián rushes to the garage but finds only Marfil’s phone and Alejandro’s dead body in the trunk. The film ends with Marfil taken by Kozel and Sebastián surrounded by armed gunmen.
How the Movie Differs From the Book
The film’s ending is significantly different from Mercedes Ron’s novel. In the book, Sebastián is not an FBI agent. He is a former drug dealer who was saved from poverty by Alejandro and later became Marfil’s bodyguard. The Russian mob wants Marfil dead as revenge against her father, and Sebastián tries to convince her to go to Miami under Kozel’s protection. She refuses, feeling betrayed by the man she loves. The book ends with Marfil going to Kozel, while the movie ends with her being forcibly taken by him.
What to Expect From the Drawn Apart Sequel
The sequel, titled Drawn Apart (original Spanish title: Enfrentados: Ébano), has already completed production. Ester Expósito confirmed to Fangirlish that “people don’t have to worry” because the wait for Part 2 will not be long. The sequel is expected to arrive on Prime Video in 2027, with the second book in the duology scheduled for publication on March 2, 2027. Hugo Diego García described the follow-up as “a mix of John Wick and Rambo and Taken, but with the heart of The Notebook.” Mercedes Ron explained that the second film will be darker and more action-focused, saying, “It’s different because we’re gonna see Marfil with Marcus. It’s really hard what she’s gonna go through, and all the thriller and all the dark sides of this story is gonna be focused on the second part.” Expósito added that the sequel “changes so much, it’s like another genre. Suddenly, it’s pure action and thriller. Much darker, much more extreme.”
Ester Expósito and Hugo Diego García’s On-Screen Chemistry
The intense chemistry between Ester Expósito and Hugo Diego García has been a major talking point. Expósito told Glamour that she loved that Marfil is “so stubborn and not the victim that needs to be saved,” and she related to the character’s desire to take control after being kidnapped. Hugo Diego García, a former boxing trainer, helped Expósito with her fight training, including lessons that sometimes took place in Madrid nightclubs. Reports from Spanish media suggested the two actors were dating in real life after footage of them kissing at a Madrid nightclub surfaced in February 2025. The reported romance ended by October 2025. Expósito has since been linked to footballer Kylian Mbappé since early 2026. García, when asked about Expósito in March 2026, said, “I just want her to be happy.”
