The upcoming live-action movie based on the hit video game Elden Ring has revealed its full cast and release date. A24 and Bandai Namco Entertainment announced on April 19, 2026, that production is now underway for the film adaptation of the 2022 Game of the Year winner. The movie will arrive in theaters on March 3, 2028, and will be filmed for IMAX theaters. This marks the first time A24 has produced a movie specifically for the IMAX format.

The game, created by FromSoftware under the direction of Hidetaka Miyazaki, features a story written by George R. R. Martin, the author behind Game of Thrones. Since its release in 2022, Elden Ring has sold over 30 million copies worldwide and won more than 400 Game of the Year awards. The film adaptation is being written and directed by Alex Garland, known for his work on Civil War, Ex Machina, and 28 Years Later.

Principal photography is scheduled to last around 100 days and began in spring 2026. The film is being shot in the United Kingdom, and under-construction sets were reportedly spotted earlier in April before the official announcement.

Garland, a longtime fan of the game, personally traveled to Japan to meet with game director Hidetaka Miyazaki and the publishers at Bandai Namco and FromSoftware to pitch his vision for the adaptation. The film is produced by Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich (DNA Films), as well as George R. R. Martin and Vince Gerardis.

Which Characters Are in the Movie?

As of now, the specific characters each actor will play remain unknown. The game features a vast world called the Lands Between, where players control a Tarnished character trying to restore the Elden Ring. Key figures from the game include Margit the Fell Omen, Godrick the Grafted, Malenia, General Radahn, and Ranni the Witch. However, A24 and Bandai Namco have not confirmed which storylines or characters will appear in the film adaptation.

The Elden Ring movie will hit theaters on March 3, 2028.
