Nearly three decades after the original film cast its spell, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are back as the Owens sisters. Warner Bros. just dropped the first trailer for Practical Magic 2, and fans are already loving what they see. The teaser gives a proper look at the long-awaited follow-up without giving away too much of the story. It brings back the magic, the dark family curse, and adds some new faces to the mix. The movie will hit theaters on September 11, 2026, in the United States and many other countries.
Here are the five biggest things we learned from the trailer that make the sequel look even better than expected.
The Trailer Opens With a Perfect Throwback to the Original Movie
The teaser starts with Sally Owens (Bullock) speaking directly to viewers. She says, “I’m sure you’ve heard of the Owens family. The ones from Massachusetts. The ones their neighbors whisper are witches”. This line works as a quick refresher for anyone who watched the 1998 film years ago and forgot the details. It also sets the mood right away. The trailer takes fans back to that same windswept coastal Victorian home from the first movie. Everything looks familiar but also a bit more grown up, just like the characters.
Gillian Owens on Tinder Brings the Humor
One of the funniest moments in the trailer comes when Gillian Owens (Kidman) and Sally meet a new character played by Lee Pace. Sally tells him, “Everyone we love dies.” Then Gillian adds, “A really horrible death. But it’s justโฆ it’s not great for the Tinder bio”. This joke works on two levels. First, it reminds viewers about the main curse from the original film where any man an Owens woman loves dies a terrible death. Second, it shows that Gillian has kept up with modern times. The sequel takes place 25 years after the first movie, so seeing Gillian on a dating app makes perfect sense. The line got a big reaction when the trailer played at CinemaCon last week.
The Next Generation of Owens Witches Arrives
The trailer gives fans their first look at Joey King and Maisie Williams as Sally’s grown daughters. King plays Kylie Owens, the older daughter. Williams plays the younger sister Antonia. Both young women appear at the Owens house and get a warm welcome from their great-aunts Bridget and Frances (played by Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing). The trailer later shows all four women jumping off a building while holding umbrellas, which is how Owens witches fly using their powers. Gillian shouts, “I’ve waited such a long time for this”. This moment makes it clear that the new generation has magic running through their blood too. The sequel will focus on how the family curse affects Sally’s daughters as they grow into their powers.
The Midnight Margarita Song Returns
Music plays a big part in making the trailer feel connected to the original. Harry Nilsson’s song “Coconut” plays throughout most of the teaser. For fans of the first film, this song brings back strong memories. It was the same track that played during the famous “midnight margaritas” scene where Sally, Gillian, and their aunts danced in the kitchen after burying Gillian’s abusive boyfriend Jimmy in the garden. Using this song in the trailer was a smart choice. It reminds viewers of that wild, fun, and slightly dark moment from the first movie without having to explain anything.
A Direct Callback to the Jimmy Situation
The trailer includes a very clear reference to the main conflict from the 1998 film. In one scene, Gillian, Sally, and Lee Pace’s character sit on a bus heading somewhere to fix a problem. Gillian tries to stay positive and says, “Everything’s going to be okay.” Sally fires back, “Everything’s going to be okay? Just like when we had to bury a corpse under a rosebush? That kind of fine or different?” This line directly refers to when Sally killed Jimmy (Gillian’s boyfriend) to protect her sister, then had to bring him back to life, and then dealt with his angry spirit causing chaos. The callout shows that Sally still carries the weight of that night. It also tells fans that the sequel won’t ignore what happened before. The past is still very much a part of their present problems.
“Home is what this is and getting to return to these characters that have been so loved and so shared, it really has been magical. And being back together, it just clicked.” – Nicole Kidman on reprising her role at CinemaCon
Fresh Faces Join the Owens Family Drama
Besides Lee Pace, the trailer shows other new actors joining the franchise. Xolo Maridueรฑa and Solly McLeod appear in unspecified roles. Pace’s character seems important. He meets the sisters and already knows who they are, asking, “You’re the Owens sisters”. Whether he helps them or causes more trouble remains unclear. But his presence adds mystery to the story. The sequel also brings back Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest as the eccentric aunts Frances and Jet Owens. Seeing them again gives the movie a strong link to the original.
What We Know About the Story So Far
The trailer hints at a darker problem this time around. The official synopsis says the Owens sisters must “confront the dark curse that threatens to unravel their family once and for all”. Sally’s daughters uncover hidden family secrets and develop their own dark abilities. The trailer shows the family traveling to what looks like an abandoned castle, suggesting they go on a quest to understand where the curse started. Susanne Bier, known for directing “Bird Box,” takes charge behind the camera. The screenplay comes from Akiva Goldsman (who worked on the original) and Georgia Pritchett from “Succession”. Bullock and Kidman also serve as producers this time around.
