Emmy Rossum has revealed that her nude scenes on Shameless created unexpected problems in her dating life. The actress, who played Fiona Gallagher for nine seasons on the Showtime series, said men she went out with already had ideas about who she was based on her on-screen nudity. Rossum shared the details during a recent appearance on the “Pretty Tough” podcast with host Maria Sharapova, which was published on September 16, 2026. Her comments have since drawn attention across entertainment outlets for how openly she discussed the personal cost of the role.
Rossum began playing Fiona when she was 24 years old, a time she described as already difficult for figuring out her identity. The added layer of on-screen nudity made dating harder. “He’s like, ‘But I feel like running for office and dating someone who’s been exposed in the way that you have … do you think that would be tricky for me?’ And I was like, ‘This is an insane conversation to have.’”
Rossum made clear that the relationship did not continue. Her point was not about the man himself but about the pattern she kept running into: people forming opinions about her based on scenes she performed as an actress.
