The last few seconds of Euphoria Season 3 Episode 5 left viewers with their jaws on the floor. Zendaya’s Rue Bennett, buried up to her neck in dirt, faced an oncoming horse and a swinging polo mallet. The screen went black. Fans have been panicking for a full week, desperate to know if the show really killed off its central character. Now, with Episode 6 arriving on May 17, 2026, the answers are finally coming.

HBO has released the preview for Episode 6, titled “Stand Still and See,” and it confirms a lot of what viewers have been guessing. Rue is not dead. But the trouble she is in might be worse than anyone imagined. At the same time, Alexa Demie’s Maddy Perez has formed a strange new partnership with the crime boss Alamo, played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. That connection might actually be the only thing keeping Rue alive.

Rue Bennett Survives the Attack, But Danger Keeps Getting Closer

The official “Weeks Ahead” trailer for Euphoria Season 3 already spoiled Rue’s survival. Footage shows Rue running through what looks like a cartel tunnel while someone fires a gun at her. That scene hasn’t happened yet. So Rue clearly escapes Alamo’s ranch.

But Episode 5’s ending was still terrifying. Alamo’s men forced Rue to dig a hole in the middle of nowhere. They buried her with only her head above ground. Then Alamo rode toward her on horseback, swinging a mallet, right before the episode cut to black. Many fans pointed out that killing Rue with three episodes left in the season would force the show to rebuild its entire final act around characters who simply cannot carry the story the same way.

The real reason Rue survives comes down to Maddy Perez. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje spoke to Decider about his character and explained exactly why Rue gets to live.

“It’s a new era for him as someone from the older generation. So they’re both teaching each other, you know, traits from their generation. He’s teaching her traditions and the old school, and they’re teaching him this new frontier through social media and how that can really propel his empire. So he’s really intrigued by that, and to be quite honest, it’s probably the main reason Rue survives. Yeah, because she’s useful.” — Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje on Alamo and Maddy’s partnership

That interview confirms that Alamo sees value in keeping Rue around. She connects him to Maddy, and Maddy now runs his online business. Rue’s usefulness is the only reason she is still breathing.

Maddy Perez and Alamo’s Surprising Business Partnership Takes Center Stage

Nobody expected this storyline when Euphoria Season 3 started. Maddy began the season as a low-level Hollywood assistant, cleaning up dog vomit for a terrible boss. Now she manages OnlyFans talent for a dangerous arms dealer. The shift is wild, but it makes perfect sense for her character.

Episode 5 showed how this partnership formed. Alamo became interested in what Maddy did for Cassie. He wanted to know how to turn his own girls into profitable online stars. At his request, Maddy went with him to the Silver Slipper and picked Magick and Kitty as her newest clients. Just like that, Maddy Perez became a crime boss’s social media strategist.

The Episode 6 preview shows more of this dynamic. Alamo says to Maddy, “Here she is.” Maddy replies, “It would be good if you gave the girl some time off.” Alamo answers, “You talking about time off? If you did, we wouldn’t have this agreement”. Their relationship is strictly business. But it gives Maddy a level of power she has never had before.

During one scene in Episode 5, Alamo asked Maddy if she trusted Rue. Maddy said, “She’s a little crazy, but she’s got a good heart”. That small vote of confidence might be the only reason Alamo hasn’t finished the job.

Cassie’s Rise Gets Darker as Nate Pulls the Strings

Sydney Sweeney’s Cassie Howard is living a completely different life now. Episode 5 revealed that she gained 50,000 OnlyFans subscribers after a viral collaboration with influencer Brondon Fontaine. Maddy pushed her into producing fetish content, including ASMR videos and podcast appearances where Cassie talks about sex positivity.

But Jacob Elordi’s Nate Jacobs is still in control. Nate convinced Cassie to transfer him $65,000 for mortgage payments. He also encouraged her to make more explicit content with Fontaine for extra income. Cassie is the one doing the work, but Nate is taking the money.

The Episode 6 preview shows Cassie struggling. She shouts into a phone, “Nate, answer the phone!” Nate, meanwhile, keeps getting beaten up by the people he owes money to. At one point he yells, “You wanna ruin my life?” right before getting attacked again. Their marriage is falling apart in real time.

The preview also shows a moment where Cassie gets asked, “What do you do for a living?” She answers, “I’m a performer.” Then she adds, “The hardest part is how people treat me. Even my own family”. The camera cuts to Maude Apatow’s Lexi, who rolls her eyes. The Howard sisters are not getting along any time soon.

Laurie and Alamo Face Off as Two Crime Worlds Collide

The biggest moment in the Episode 6 preview happens at the end. Martha Kelly’s Laurie finally comes face to face with Alamo. She walks up with her crew and says, “Alamo Brown, I hate that things have gotten so contentious between us”.

This meeting has been building all season. Rue owes Laurie a massive debt from the Season 2 suitcase incident. Laurie has been waiting in the background while Rue played both sides. Now Alamo and Laurie are direct competitors. The DEA has been pushing Rue to set them up. Something has to give.

Alamo opens the preview with a paranoid line: “Why do I feel like everybody’s trying to fck me?” His associate Bishop follows up by saying, “You never really know a motherfcker’s true intentions”. Alamo knows people are lying to him. He just hasn’t figured out who yet.

The standoff between Laurie and Alamo will likely happen in Episode 6 or Episode 7. Rue will be caught in the middle. The trailer footage of her running through a tunnel while being shot at probably comes from this conflict.

Jules Vaughn, played by Hunter Schafer, also appears in the preview. She confronts someone and says, “I don’t get it. You show up. You disappear”. That person could be Nate. It could also be Rue. Jules has been living as a sugar baby to an older man this season, but her connection to Rue has never fully disappeared.

What to Expect When Episode 6 Arrives

Euphoria Season 3 Episode 6 drops on Sunday, May 17, 2026. It airs at 9 p.m. Eastern Time on HBO and streams on Max. For viewers in the UK, the episode will be available on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV on Monday, May 18. Australian fans can watch on Binge and Foxtel starting Monday afternoon.

The episode is titled “Stand Still and See.” HBO has not released an official synopsis, but the preview makes a few things clear. Rue is alive. Maddy is running Alamo’s online business. Cassie is falling apart while Nate takes her money. And Laurie is finally ready to confront Alamo directly.

With three episodes left after this one, the final run of Euphoria Season 3 is shaping up to be nonstop chaos. Rue may have survived Episode 5. But with Laurie and Alamo about to go to war, and with Rue stuck directly between them, surviving the whole season is a completely different question.
