The wait for Euphoria Season 3 lasted nearly four and a half years. Many viewers wondered if the show could still pull in big numbers after such a long time away. The answer came on April 12, 2026, when the new season finally arrived on HBO and Max. The numbers are now in, and they tell a clear story.
The Euphoria Season 3 premiere pulled in 8.5 million viewers across HBO and Max in its first three days. That is a 44% increase compared to the Season 2 premiere. For a show that took a long break, these numbers show that viewers did not forget about Rue and the rest of the cast.
Viewership numbers climbed higher than Season 2 opening
The third season debut outperformed the previous season’s opening by a large margin. The Season 2 premiere had drawn 2.4 million live-plus-same-day viewers back in January 2022. The Season 3 premiere almost tripled that number in its first three days.
To put this in perspective, the Season 2 finale had scored 6.6 million viewers. The new season’s opening episode beat even that season-ending high point. The show has also become the #1 title on Max worldwide since the season 3 debut night.
Social media reaction was just as strong. #Euphoria trended on X for 12 straight hours in the United States, holding the top spot for six of those hours. On TikTok, the #Euphoria hashtag became the second most viewed movie and TV tag in the US with 63 million views.
Four year gap did not hurt the show’s popularity
The long delay between seasons came from many factors. The cast members became major movie stars, which made scheduling difficult. The 2023 Hollywood strikes also pushed production back. Then the tragic passing of Angus Cloud in 2023 added another emotional layer to the show’s return.
Many entertainment experts thought the long wait might hurt the show’s return numbers. But the opposite happened. The break gave new viewers time to discover the first two seasons on streaming. It also built up want for the new episodes among existing fans.
Time jump and divided reviews did not stop viewers from tuning in
Season 3 takes place five years after the events of Season 2. The characters are no longer in high school. Zendaya returns as Rue, who now faces trouble with a drug dealer she owes money to. Sydney Sweeney plays Cassie, who works as an adult content creator in the new season. Jacob Elordi plays Nate, now Cassie’s husband.
Critics had mixed feelings about the new episodes. The season holds a 56% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on early reviews. This is lower than Season 1’s 80% and Season 2’s 78% scores. Some critics said the show lost its way after leaving the high school setting. Others called the first episodes a disappointment.
But these critical reviews did not keep viewers away. The show’s cultural power and the star power of its cast proved stronger than any mixed critic opinions.
