Drug Controversy and Legal Sentence

In December 2020, Ilhoon was charged with purchasing approximately 130 million KRW (~96,520 USD) worth of marijuana and smoking it between July 2016 and January 2019. Initially, he was sentenced to two years in prison, alongside a fine of 133 million KRW (98,747 USD).

However, after appealing, his sentence was reduced to two years in prison with a three-year suspended sentence, 40 hours of a drug treatment program, and a fine of 126.63 million KRW (94,017.98 USD). The court acknowledged that Ilhoon had stopped using marijuana on his own before being caught and considered his family’s support and lack of a prior criminal record in reducing the sentence.

A Step Toward Redemption

Ilhoon submitted 88 letters of self-reflection during the appeal process, requesting leniency. After his release, he issued an apology on social media, saying:

“During the past few years of investigation, trial, and imprisonment, I’ve deeply reflected on my life. As much as I have caused harm to society and disappointed those who believed in me, I will live properly from now on and make every effort to ensure that I do not hurt anyone again.”
