Warner Bros. has confirmed the first-ever Game of Thrones feature film. The movie has a working title: Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest. It will tell the story of Aegon the Conqueror and his dragons.
The announcement came during the studio’s presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on April 14, 2026. The film is part of Warner Bros.’ slate for “2027 and beyond”.
The Story: Aegon the Conqueror’s Rise
The movie will focus on Aegon I Targaryen, the legendary figure who united the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. He did this with the help of his two sisters, Visenya and Rhaenys, who were also his wives.
Together, they rode three massive dragons, including the famous Balerion the Black Dread. They conquered six of the seven kingdoms and forged the Iron Throne from the melted swords of their defeated enemies.
The story takes place roughly 300 years before the events of the original Game of Thrones series. It draws from George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, which chronicles the history of the Targaryen dynasty.
Who Is Making the Movie?
Beau Willimon is writing the screenplay. He is best known as the showrunner of Netflix’s House of Cards and as a writer on Disney+’s Andor. His experience with political dramas suggests the film will balance large-scale action with complex power struggles.
No director has been announced yet. Casting details are also unknown. Fans have already started online campaigns, with names like Henry Cavill being suggested for the role of Aegon.
When Will It Be Released?
Warner Bros. has placed the film on its “2027 and beyond” slate. This means it likely won’t hit theaters until at least 2027, and possibly closer to 2028. The title “Aegon’s Conquest” is currently a working title and could change during development.
Other Game of Thrones Projects
The movie is part of a larger strategy to expand the Game of Thrones universe. Several other projects are already in the works:
- House of the Dragon Season 3 is expected to premiere in summer 2026. The series is set about 200 years before Game of Thrones.
- A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premiered in January 2026 and has already been renewed for a second season, expected in 2027. This series takes place about 90 years before Game of Thrones.
- A stage production called Game of Thrones: The Mad King will play at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in London from July 20 to September 5, 2026.
