George Clooney used his moment in the spotlight at the Venice Film Festival to send a strong message to world leaders and the wealthy. He warned against those who use fear to divide people. The 65-year-old actor received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the festival’s opening ceremony on Wednesday. He turned his acceptance speech into a call for unity and a defense of artists and journalists.
His wife, Amal Clooney, and close friend Laura Dern were in the audience. Dern presented him with the award. Clooney’s speech quickly moved from humor to a serious look at the current state of the world.
Clooney Warns Against Fear and Division
Clooney did not hold back. He directly addressed what he sees as a global problem. He said that powerful people and those with money are trying to make the public afraid of each other.
“We’re living through a moment in time where the people in charge and people with the most money are telling us to fear one another. But we know better than that, don’t we? Because history does teach us a lesson.”
He pointed out that authoritarians do not start by going after politicians. Instead, they target those who ask questions and create art.
“The first people that authoritarians try to shut down are not politicians. They’re journalists who ask questions, they’re the artists who refuse simple answers, the filmmakers, writers, actors and musicians who insist that someone you never met is deserving of your empathy.”
Clooney made it clear that stories are a threat to those who spread fear.
“Stories are always dangerous to people who peddle in fear. The people who are afraid of books and music and stories are never the heroes in history.”
Movies May Not Fix Everything, But They Matter
The actor was honest about the limits of film. He said movies cannot stop wars, lower inflation, or fix elections. However, he argued that they serve a greater purpose.
“They remind us that a stranger is never a stranger and that he might just be the hero in somebody else’s story. And if we can still sit together in the dark and care about people that we have never met, I think maybe we’ll be OK.”
He reflected on his own career, calling it a “series of happy accidents” rather than a planned path. He thanked the many people who helped him along the way, including directors, writers, and crew members.
“Nobody arrives anywhere on their own.”
Clooney Defends Free Speech and Criticizes Political System
Before the ceremony, Clooney spoke at a press conference. He defended actor Mark Ruffalo’s right to speak freely about a proposed merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Clooney questioned whether the merger made financial sense.
He also criticized the current political situation in the United States. He used the word “kakistocracy,” which means a government run by the least qualified people.
“I think maybe we have a kakistocracy right now, but we’ll get through it.”
He expressed hope for the future, saying that the upcoming elections would serve as a check and balance.

Clooney began his speech with a joke about receiving a lifetime achievement award.
“You know, when they tell you that you’re gonna be getting a lifetime achievement award, there are really two things that come to mind. The first is what an incredible honor this is. And then the second is, uh, do they know something that I don’t?”
He also made a joke about his role as Batman, saying his two kids are the only people who thought he was good in the film.
Laura Dern gave a heartfelt introduction. She read letters from Clooney’s friends, including Brad Pitt and Adam Sandler. Pitt joked that Clooney should stay off the dance floor. Dern called Clooney one of her oldest and closest friends. She praised him as a person of deep humanity and integrity.
The ceremony took place at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. Clooney has a long history with the festival. He premiered films there in the past two years and married Amal in Venice in 2014. He is also scheduled to hold a masterclass on his career.
The festival itself has seen some controversy. Organizers cancelled and then reinstated the annual jury press conference. Against this backdrop, Clooney’s comments about silencing dissent carried extra weight. Jury president Maggie Gyllenhaal also spoke about the political nature of films and the lack of female directors in the competition.
Clooney’s speech was a reminder of the power of art and storytelling in difficult times. He used his award to stand up for artists, journalists, and everyone who refuses to live in fear.
