The doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial just can’t catch a break. With the Season 22 finale of Grey’s Anatomy just days away, the show dropped two huge bombshells that have fans worried about their favorite characters. A main doctor got fired, and another might be fighting for his life after a serious car crash.
The April 30 episode, which aired on ABC, ended with Chief Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) delivering shocking news to Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson). The topic of their conversation was Dr. Benson Kwan (Harry Shum Jr.), the second-year surgical resident known for his sharp skills and confident attitude.
Why Dr. Kwan Got the Boot
Dr. Kwan’s firing stems from a choice he made to save a patient’s life. Earlier in the season, he injected a man with an experimental hydrogel treatment. The problem was that the FDA had specifically rejected this drug. He broke the rules and put a patient at risk without official approval.
Dr. Bailey tried to protect Kwan. When the Institutional Review Board (IRB) started investigating, she lied and said she was the one who gave the unauthorized drug. For a while, it looked like her plan would work. But the truth always comes out at Grey Sloan.
“I know it was Kwan,” Webber told Bailey. “You lied to me. You looked in my face and told me you did it. You’re benched from surgery until further notice.”
Bailey didn’t seem too worried about her own punishment at first. She asked Webber to go easy on Kwan since he was just trying to help. That is when Webber dropped the final hammer.
“That won’t be a problem,” Webber said. “He’s fired.”
The hospital’s top boss fired Dr. Kwan off-screen. The young resident didn’t even get a chance to say goodbye in person during the episode.
Is Harry Shum Jr. Really Leaving the Show?
Even though Grey’s Anatomy fired his character, Harry Shum Jr. is not gone yet. The promo for the Season 22 finale (airing May 7) shows Kwan back at the hospital.
A nearby bridge collapse creates an “all hands on deck” emergency. In the promo, Kwan steps forward when Chief Webber calls for help. This suggests the fired doctor might get a chance to prove himself. He could earn his job back by saving lives during the disaster.
Shum joined the cast in Season 19 as part of the new class of residents. Fans have enjoyed watching his character grow. His fate likely depends on whether he can fix the damage he caused during the finale.
Owen Hunt’s Life Is in Danger
While Kwan deals with losing his job, Dr. Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) is fighting for his life. The episode showed Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) considering a job offer in Paris. She and Owen argued about the move. The fight left their marriage on shaky ground.
Owen tried to make things right by leaving a voicemail for Teddy the next morning. But the voicemail took a terrifying turn. Teddy heard the sounds of a serious car crash while Owen was still on the phone. The show did not confirm if he survived.
This cliffhanger connects to the real-life news that Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver are set to leave the series after the Season 22 finale. They announced their departure in March. The show has not yet confirmed if their characters will die or simply move away.
