The wait is finally over for Heartstopper fans. The beloved series has come to an end with Heartstopper Forever, a feature-length film that serves as the official conclusion to Nick and Charlie’s journey. The movie dropped on Netflix on July 17, 2026, giving fans the closure they have been waiting for since Season 3 ended.

Creator Alice Oseman chose to wrap up the story with a film instead of a fourth season. The decision came in April 2025, and the result is a nearly two-hour movie that combines elements from the sixth graphic novel and the Nick and Charlie novella. The film picks up right where Season 3 left off, with Nick preparing to leave for university and Charlie stepping into his final year at Truham.

Nick and Charlie Break Up in Heartstopper Forever

The biggest shock in the film comes when Nick and Charlie actually break up. The couple, who fans have watched grow together over three seasons, hit a rough patch when Nick’s anxiety about leaving for Leeds University becomes too much to handle. Nick struggles to open up about his feelings, and Charlie grows frustrated with his boyfriend’s silence.

The breakup happens during a heated argument at a party. Nick tells Charlie, “I’m only happy when I’m with you,” and Charlie responds, “I don’t think that’s how it’s supposed to be”. The conversation escalates quickly, and they agree to part ways. For a few days, they go completely no-contact.

Oseman explained why she put the couple through such a difficult moment. She said the breakup was necessary for them to grow as individuals.

“Nick and Charlie love each other so much, but sometimes they ignore their own issues to try and help each other. There’s a slight feeling of codependence between them.”

Nick had spent so much time caring for Charlie and helping him through his eating disorder that he lost sight of who he was as a person. The breakup forces both of them to confront their own struggles separately.

The Reunion Fans Were Waiting For

Joe Locke, who plays Charlie, called the reunion scene “very full circle, in both a cinematic and thematic way”. Kit Connor, who plays Nick, said it was one of his favorite scenes in the film.

“That’s actually one of my favorite scenes in the film. I think it’s just a really lovely moment … That place encapsulates their relationship.”

Oseman described the beach as “their beach”. The location holds special meaning because it’s where they had their first date back in Season 1.

Nick and Charlie’s Future Together

The film gives fans a clear picture of what’s ahead for Nick and Charlie. After they reconcile at the beach, they agree that their teenage relationship can last a lifetime. They head off to prom together, celebrating the next stages of their lives.

The epilogue shows Charlie visiting Nick in Leeds after he has settled into university life. Nick has made new friends and seems comfortable in his new environment. Charlie wakes up next to him, and they flip through their photobook together. The book has pages for many more memories, suggesting their story is far from over.

Joe Locke reflected on saying goodbye to the character he has played for years.

“It feels like sending a kid off to university. There’s nostalgia but real melancholy.”

Kit Connor added that the experience was “bittersweet”. He also shared his pride in what the show has accomplished.

“It’s sad to be saying goodbye to the beautiful thing that is Heartstopper, but I’m very proud of what it’s been and what this final piece has become.”

What Happens to the Other Characters

Heartstopper has always been about more than just Nick and Charlie. The film gives each character a proper send-off.

Elle and Tao face the toughest outcome. Elle decides to go to Berlin to pursue her art career. The couple breaks up for good, though they share one last dance at prom. In the epilogue, Tao visits Elle in Berlin to support her art, leaving their future open-ended.

Tara and Darcy remain strong throughout the film. Tara decides to spend the summer traveling across Europe with Darcy.

Isaac starts writing his book. Imogen accepts her identity as a lesbian, and Sahar performs her first solo show. Tori gets news that her boyfriend Michael has made it to the British Olympic ice-skating training squad.

Fan Reactions to the Heartstopper Forever Ending

Social media has been buzzing with reactions since the film dropped on July 17. Fans have shared their thoughts on X (formerly Twitter) and other platforms.

One fan wrote, “Heartstopper Forever remains just as emotional and impactful as previous seasons, culminating in an optimistic, nostalgic love letter to the franchise”.

Another fan shared, “Heartstopper forever ending was very cuutee I loved it”.

A third fan posted, “HeartstopperForever is one of the sweetest endings to a beautiful story. It made me laugh, cry, and smile from start to finish”.

Not all reactions were purely positive. Some fans wished certain storylines had been explored more deeply. One viewer noted, “I honestly wish we didn’t focus so much on the conflict because I feel like some parts of the story weren’t dug into enough”.

Despite minor criticisms, the overwhelming response has been positive. Fans seem satisfied with the ending Oseman crafted for her beloved characters.

A More Mature Heartstopper

The film carries a BBFC rating of 15, compared to the PG rating of the first season. The characters have grown up, and the content reflects that maturity.

Kit Connor and Joe Locke have spoken about why the film includes more mature content. They said it would have felt unrealistic to avoid depicting sex, given the characters’ ages.

Oseman explained that the shift felt natural.

“It felt like a natural progression for these characters.”

How to Watch Heartstopper Forever

Heartstopper Forever is available to stream on Netflix worldwide. The film runs for approximately 114 minutes. Netflix released it at 8am GMT on July 17, 2026. The movie serves as the definitive ending to the television adaptation of Alice Oseman’s graphic novel series.

The sixth and final Heartstopper graphic novel was published on July 2, 2026, just two weeks before the film’s release. Fans who wanted to experience the complete story could read the book and then watch the movie.

Oseman expressed her feelings about bringing the story to a close after more than a decade of work.

“Now they’re not anymore, and it’s very strange and very sad to be saying goodbye. But I also feel really proud to have got to this point and to have been able to tell the full story, to be able to end it in the way that I wanted to.”

She also shared her hopes for how fans would receive the ending.

“I hope people enjoy the ending. Wrapping up a story that’s been going on for so long is a challenge. But I hope that people feel satisfied and that Heartstopper has brought them joy. I hope they feel like they can say, ‘These characters are going to be okay. We’re going to be okay. We love Heartstopper, but it’s okay that it’s come to an end.’”

Oseman has left the door open for possible spin-offs in the future, saying she would “never say never”. For now, though, Heartstopper Forever provides a proper ending to one of the most beloved queer teen dramas of recent years.
