What Happened in Episode 2?
Episode 2 saw the aftermath of the Battle of the Gullet, where Rhaenyra’s son Jacaerys (Jace) was killed. Overcome with grief and rage, Rhaenyra decided to take King’s Landing. With the help of Daemon and the dragonseeds Hugh Hammer and Ulf White, she claimed the capital with little resistance, as Alicent had kept her word to ensure a peaceful takeover.
After taking the Red Keep, Daemon brought Otto Hightower, who had been a prisoner, before Rhaenyra. To establish her authority, Rhaenyra personally executed Otto, leaving a trail of blood behind her as she walked up to the Iron Throne and sat down. The episode ended with Alicent and Helaena being brought in as prisoners, with Alicent seeing her father’s head.
What to Expect in Episode 3
The trailer for Episode 3 shows the challenges Rhaenyra now faces as queen. While she has won King’s Landing, holding it and ruling the Seven Kingdoms will be difficult.
Rhaenyra’s Struggle to Rule
In the preview, Rhaenyra declares, “All eyes look to me now. I must justify my father’s faith in me. Rule as he would have wished.” She is determined to prove her father, King Viserys, did not make a mistake in naming her his heir. However, a council member warns her that while her resources are small, her hazards are many, suggesting immediate political and military challenges.
Daemon’s Advice and Alicent’s Warning
The trailer shows Daemon warning Rhaenyra about Daeron Targaryen, Alicent’s third son, who is a claimant to the throne. “You’re going to have to kill him,” Daemon tells Rhaenyra. Daemon also gives a haunting warning: “You may not rule and remain yourself. There is, in your, a door that just shut. You will do things that your heart would have recoiled from.” Rhaenyra pushes back, saying, “I dispute that I must become what I am not.”
Alicent also appears in the trailer and ominously states, “Time will tell.” With Alicent now a prisoner and her father executed, her relationship with Rhaenyra is bound to become more complex and tense.
A Historic Milestone
Episode 3 marks the 100th episode in the World of Westeros franchise, counting all episodes across Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The episode was written by Sara Hess and directed by Clare Kilner, making Kilner one of only four directors to helm seven or more episodes in the franchise.
