House of the Dragon delivered one of its most powerful moments yet in Season 3, Episode 2. Rhaenyra Targaryen finally took the Iron Throne, but the path to get there was soaked in grief and blood. The episode, which aired on June 28, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max, showed Rhaenyra making a brutal choice that will change the course of the war.
The Queen’s journey to King’s Landing came after the devastating loss of her son, Jacaerys Velaryon, in the Season 3 premiere. This grief pushed Rhaenyra to finally accept her destiny, but claiming the throne came at a high personal cost.
Rhaenyra’s Grief Becomes a Catalyst for Action
The episode started with Rhaenyra, played by Emma D’Arcy, unable to function after Jace’s death. She was bedridden and consumed by sorrow. Her husband, Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), returned from the Riverlands to find her broken. He reminded her of the prophecy and that her sons did not die in vain. He convinced her that the only way to honor their sacrifice was to claim the Iron Throne.
Rhaenyra learned that Aemond had left King’s Landing on Vhagar. This was the opening she needed. With Daemon and their dragons, she flew to the capital to take what was hers.
The Fall of King’s Landing and Otto Hightower’s Execution
Alicent Hightower had prepared for Rhaenyra’s arrival. She instructed the guards not to attack the dragons and tried to escape the city with her daughter Helaena. Rhaenyra and Daemon entered the Red Keep with little resistance.
In the throne room, there was no sign of Aegon II, who had already fled. However, Daemon discovered a prisoner in the dungeons: Otto Hightower. Lord Larys Strong had secretly imprisoned him there.
Daemon brought Otto before Rhaenyra. He told her that how she handled Otto would define her rule. Rhaenyra took Daemon’s sword, Dark Sister, and prepared to execute the man who helped usurp her throne.
The execution was not clean. Rhaenyra sobbed as she swung the sword. Her first strike missed, hitting Otto in the back. She struck again, ending his life. Daemon then quickly killed Lord Jasper Wylde as well.
Rhaenyra Takes the Iron Throne as a Reluctant Queen
After the brutal execution, Rhaenyra climbed the steps of the Iron Throne. She was covered in blood and visibly shaken. She did not look like a triumphant conqueror. She looked like a woman who had lost everything to get to this moment. She collapsed into the throne in a daze.
This moment was a major change from the book Fire and Blood. In the book, the Iron Throne cuts Rhaenyra when she sits on it, symbolizing that the throne rejected her. The show left out this detail. Instead, Rhaenyra’s blood came from Otto’s execution, not the throne itself. This change suggests the show is taking a more sympathetic view of her rule.

Just as Rhaenyra sat on the throne, guards brought in Alicent and Helaena. They had been caught trying to escape the city. Alicent saw her father’s headless body on the floor. She locked eyes with Rhaenyra, and the silent exchange was filled with shock and grief.
About the moment Rhaenyra and Alicent lock eyes, Emma D’Arcy told The Wrap, “I wanted her to be sort of uncomfortably revealed, actually, I think that’s probably what Alicent’s gaze does. She sees through any of the any artifice or armor that Rhaenyra might have built up.”
