Former BIGBANG member T.O.P (Choi Seung-hyun), who returned to acting in “Squid Game 2,” recently shared his thoughts on his character Thanos’s viral rap scene. The scene, where Thanos tries to impress Kang Mi-na (Song Ji-woo) with a rap, has garnered much attention and humorous reactions from viewers worldwide.

“I Was Nearly Losing My Mind”

In a reaction video released by Netflix K Content, T.O.P watched the now-famous scene and offered his candid thoughts. Known for his rapping skills honed over two decades with BIGBANG, T.O.P admitted, “I’m really cringing. A true legend wouldn’t call himself a legend. I’ve rapped for more than 20 years of my life, but I have never rapped for a woman to get her attention. So I was nearly losing my mind while filming.” He explained that rapping to attract someone was completely new to him, making the filming experience quite challenging.

The Merry-Go-Round Dance: Cowboy Moves and Improvisation

T.O.P also discussed the inspiration behind Thanos’s unique merry-go-round dance. He revealed in an interview with Chinese Zhongshi News Network Entertainment that the moves were inspired by classic cowboy actions. “I thought of typical cowboy moves. Since the lyrics go like, ‘Round and round we go.’ I improvised this move. I think it fit well and went perfectly with the lyrics.” He clarified that the dance was not intentionally an ode to BIGBANG’s hit track “BANG BANG BANG,” as some viewers had speculated.

Regarding the specific choreography of the arm-hooking and circling, T.O.P credited director Hwang Dong-hyuk. He admitted initial confusion about the moves but later understood their comedic value. “It was the director’s idea to hook arms and circle around. I wasn’t sure at first, but then I realized it would be hilarious since both characters have a few loose screws by this time. I figured it would be a really funny scene and danced like my soul was already far gone.”

T.O.P also expressed gratitude for the online challenges inspired by the scene, saying, “Unexpectedly many people did the challenge online, and I’m thankful; it made such an impression worldwide.”

Thanos: A Flawed but Hilarious Character

In “Squid Game 2,” T.O.P plays Choi Subong, a rapper who adopts the stage name Thanos. After a failed cryptocurrency investment leaves him heavily in debt, he joins the Squid Game as player 230. Despite his flaws and questionable actions within the game, including contributing to the deaths of other participants, Thanos’s character has resonated with viewers due to his comedic portrayal.

“Squid Game 2,” also starring Lee Byung-hun, Lee Jung-jae, Wi Ha-jun, Im Siwan, Park Gyu-young, and Jo Yu-ri, is available for streaming on Netflix.
