A new Korean drama series on Netflix is scaring audiences with its simple but terrifying idea. The show If Wishes Could Kill arrived on the streaming platform on April 24, 2026. The story centers on a strange mobile application called Girigo. This app promises to make any wish come true. But there is a deadly price for using it. The show mixes high school life with supernatural horror. It asks a frightening question: what would you wish for if you knew you would die in 24 hours?
The eight-episode series comes from creators Park Youn-seo and Park Joong-seop. Park Youn-seo previously worked on famous shows like Kingdom: Season 2 and Moving. This is Netflix’s first Korean horror series made for young adults. The show features a cast of rising stars including Jeon So-young, Kang Mi-na, Baek Sun-ho, Hyun Woo-seok, and Lee Hyo-je. How The Girigo App Works
Girigo works like a normal mobile application on the surface. Users must record a video making their wish clearly. They also need to say their full name and birth date, which is called saju in Korean culture. The app then sends the wish out. Within moments, the wish comes true. But then a 24-hour timer starts on the user’s phone. When the timer reaches zero, the person dies.
The show reveals a cruel way to escape death. The only way to stop the countdown is to get another person to make a wish. This creates a deadly chain. Friends must choose between saving themselves or sacrificing others. The app feeds on human emotions like fear, jealousy and desperation. It turns normal high school students into potential killers.
The Dark Origin Story
The Girigo app did not start as an evil tool. Two students named Kwon Si-won and Do Hye-ryung created it for a coding contest. Si-won was a brilliant programmer who felt deep shame about her mother being a shaman. Hye-ryung was her only close friend. She actually liked learning about shamanism from Si-won’s mother.
A terrible misunderstanding destroyed their friendship. Si-won publicly shamed and bullied Hye-ryung to prove she was not connected to shamanism. The pain drove Hye-ryung to use dark blood magic called deolmi, which are Korean voodoo dolls. She made a wish for revenge against Si-won and then took her own life. Before dying, Si-won made her own wish. She wanted Hye-ryung’s curse to last forever. This final wish turned the simple coding project into a permanent death trap. Both girls’ spirits became trapped inside the app’s curse.
What Is A Maehyung?
The show introduces a key spiritual object called the Maehyung. The shaman character Kang Ha-sal explains this to the group. A Maehyung is an object that connects the human world with the spirit world. It acts like a bridge between the two realms. The curse needs this object to survive and keep killing people. The Korean word Maehyung roughly means to bury something cruel.
The characters first believe Hye-ryung’s phone is the Maehyung. But they learn the real source is Si-won’s phone. This makes sense because Si-won made the final wish that locked the curse forever. Her phone became the anchor holding the evil energy in the human world. Destroying this phone is the only way to break the curse for good.
The Meaning Behind The Name Girigo
The name Girigo has a deep and dark meaning. It comes from the Korean verb girida. People traditionally use this word to praise the good qualities of someone who has died. It is often used during funeral rites to honor the person’s life. The show uses this name to create a terrible irony. The Girigo app grants wishes in a way that honors the user’s last desire. But the honor comes at the cost of the user’s own life. The name reminds viewers that using the app is like writing your own funeral speech.
How The Curse Ends
In the final episodes, the main character Yoo Se-ah enters the spirit world with the help of the shaman Ha-sal. She discovers that Si-won’s phone is hidden in the school’s multimedia room. Ha-sal fights Si-won’s angry spirit while Se-ah searches for the phone. Se-ah finally finds the phone and stabs it with a special arrow. The destruction of the Maehyung seems to end the curse. The survivors can finally uninstall the app from their phones. But the story does not give viewers a clean, happy ending.
The Mid-Credits Scene
The show includes a shocking scene during the mid-credits. A new character finds Na-ri’s phone with help from a mysterious online user. The app still exists on that phone. This suggests the curse may not be truly gone. The person guiding them knows Na-ri’s phone password, which is Si-won’s birth date. This detail hints that Si-won’s spirit may still be alive in some form. Or maybe Na-ri herself has become the new vessel for the curse.

What Happens To The Main Characters
Choi Hyun-wook dies early in the series after making a wish on the app. Lim Na-ri, who is Se-ah’s best friend, gets possessed by the evil force and later dies. Her death is especially tragic because jealousy drove her actions. She secretly loved Se-ah’s boyfriend Kim Geon-woo. The curse used her feelings of betrayal to turn her against her own friends.
The survivors include Yoo Se-ah, Kang Ha-joon and Kim Geon-woo. The shaman Kang Ha-sal and her helper Bangwool also live through the events. Bangwool gains a strange new power at the end. A piece of glass goes into his eye during the final fight, and this allows him to see spirits afterwards.
