The penultimate episode of Imperfect Women dropped on Apple TV+ on April 22, 2026, and it delivered one of the most tense hours of television this year. Titled “Fabulation,” the episode follows Mary (Elisabeth Moss) as she fights to prove her husband Howard (Corey Stoll) murdered her best friend Nancy (Kate Mara) — only to watch her whole plan fall apart when her own secrets come to light. Just when it seems Howard has won, a final twist names a new prime suspect: Scott Reed, Nancy’s stepfather.
Artemis is Safe, But Mary Loses Control of Her Kids
Episode 7 picks up right after the terrifying events of episode 6. Artemis, Mary and Howard’s daughter, is stable after accidentally swallowing Mary’s Adderall pills. But the relief does not last long. Child Services arrives at the hospital with an emergency order. Mary must leave her home and cannot have any unsupervised time with her children until an investigation is complete.
Howard pulls Mary aside and asks a simple question: “Where is it?” He is talking about Nancy’s ring — the claddagh ring Mary found in his office closet. Mary quickly realizes that Artemis could never have reached the pills on the highest kitchen shelf. She screams at Howard, accusing him of drugging their own daughter to frame her. Police officers have to pull her away. To everyone watching, Mary looks unstable. Howard looks like a worried husband. He has won the first round.
Mary’s Hidden Obsession With Nancy Gets Exposed
Mary takes Nancy’s ring to Detective Ganz (Ana Ortiz). She explains that Howard had an affair with Nancy and that the ring proves it. But the detective has bad news. Howard came to the station earlier that morning and handed over a box of items. Inside are things Mary stole from Nancy’s house over the years — earrings, expensive perfumes, even a handkerchief with Nancy’s initials.
Detective Ganz tells Mary: “The one thing I am sure of in this case is that you, Eleanor, and Nancy were not really friends.”
Mary tries to explain that she only took small things Nancy would not miss. But the damage is done. The detective now sees Mary as an obsessed woman who stole from her dead friend. When Mary insists Howard is the killer, the detective asks if the ring is just another stolen item. Mary has no good answer. Even Eleanor (Kerry Washington) looks shocked.
The Private Investigator Finds a Clue About the Killer’s Injury
Eleanor does not give up. She hires a private investigator to help Mary. The PI shows Mary photos from Nancy’s crime scene and explains something important. The person who dragged Nancy’s body used both hands at first, then switched to using only one arm. The change suggests the killer had an injury that made it painful to use both hands.
Mary remembers that Howard has a left shoulder injury. This is the proof she needs. She sneaks back into her own house that night to find his medical records. But Howard is waiting for her.
Howard’s Darkest Manipulation Breaks Mary
Howard does not yell or threaten. He is calm, which makes him even scarier. He tells Mary that even if he goes to prison for murder, she will not get the kids back. Child Services already thinks she is unstable. Her mother runs a pot farm and cannot be a guardian. Eleanor is connected to the case. The children would likely go to foster care.
Then Howard plays his final card. He reminds Mary of their private role-playing games. Mary used to dress in Nancy’s clothes and pretend to be her. Howard would pretend to be Robert (Joel Kinnaman) , Nancy’s husband. It was their way of spicing up their marriage. Howard tells Mary that if she goes to the police with his medical records, he will make sure everyone knows about her “fabulations” — her made-up stories and fantasies.
Mary breaks. She leaves the house with Eleanor but sneaks back in the middle of the night. She tells Howard she will not say anything. She promises to be good. For the sake of staying close to her children, Mary gives up the fight.
Eleanor Takes Matters Into Her Own Hands
Eleanor wakes up to find Mary gone. She knows exactly what happened. She drives straight to the Hennessey house and bangs on the door, but Howard will not let her in.
So Eleanor goes to Robert. She finds him drunk while his father R.L. (Keith Carradine) yells at him. Eleanor walks right into the office and tells Robert that Howard killed Nancy and was the man she was having an affair with. R.L. refuses to call the police chief. He says the family has already suffered enough bad press.
But Robert finally stands up to his father. He threatens to expose all of the family’s dirty secrets — offshore accounts, illegal deals, every cover-up. R.L. has no choice. He makes the call.
Police Arrest Howard, But Then Everything Changes
The next morning, Mary is eating breakfast with Howard and the kids when Detective Ganz shows up with a warrant. Police take Howard in for questioning. Howard looks at Mary with pure hatred, convinced she broke her promise and called the cops.
Before leaving, Howard makes sure Child Services takes the children away from Mary. She watches helplessly as her kids are led out of the house. She begs Howard to believe she did not call the police, but he does not listen.
Then the episode delivers its final shock. Breaking news appears on TV. After an anonymous tip, police have found video footage of Scott Reed, Nancy’s stepfather, from the night of the murder. He is now the prime suspect. Authorities say he may be armed and dangerous.
The question now is simple: Is Scott really the killer, or is Howard somehow behind this too?
