Mark Fischbach, known to millions as Markiplier, announced the digital release date during a panel at the Cannes Film Festival. The movie will arrive exclusively on YouTube on May 31. This marks the end of its successful theatrical run and gives his huge online following a chance to see his work.
Iron Lung’s Journey From Indie Game to Theatrical Success
Iron Lung is based on a short horror game created by David Szymanski. The game became popular for its simple but scary idea. Players sit inside a small, rusty submarine in an ocean of blood. They cannot see anything outside. All they have is a camera that takes blurry photos to find their way.
Markiplier turned this concept into a full-length movie. He wrote the script, directed the film, and also played the lead role. The movie shows a post-apocalyptic future after an event called ‘The Quiet Rapture’. All the stars and habitable planets have disappeared. A convict gets sent inside a decaying submarine called the Iron Lung. Their mission is to explore an ocean of blood on a dead moon.
The film hit theaters on January 30, 2026. It played in nearly 3,000 locations across the United States and other countries. Many experts did not expect much from a movie made by a YouTuber. But Iron Lung proved them wrong.

The film’s financial performance became big news. Iron Lung earned $17.8 million during its opening weekend alone. The total worldwide collection now sits at over $50 million.
That number looks even more impressive when you look at the budget. Markiplier made the movie for only $4 million. He spent almost nothing on marketing. Dennis Harvey from Variety wrote that there is “not a lot of plot here, certainly not enough to sustain a full two hours.” Mike McCahill from The Guardian gave the film 2 out of 5 stars.
But the audience reaction told a different story. Regular viewers gave Iron Lung an 89% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. One fan wrote, “The acting, from Mark, to the voices over the speaker are fantastic.” Another viewer called it “one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time” and praised its cinematography.
