The new season of Netflix’s hit show ‘Beef’ is almost here. And it sounds very different from the first season. Director Jake Schreier recently shared that the show’s second chapter takes creative ideas from a classic romantic drama.
Season 2 will not continue the road rage story of Steven Yeun and Ali Wong. Instead, the anthology series brings a new cast and a new conflict. The first season won eight Primetime Emmy Awards. The show was renewed for a second season in October 2024.
The unexpected inspiration comes from Martin Scorsese’s 1993 film ‘The Age of Innocence.’ That movie starred Daniel Day-Lewis and Michelle Pfeiffer. It is a period drama about social rules and emotional pain, not a typical crime movie from Scorsese.
A Slower Burn With Bigger Emotional Stakes
Jake Schreier explained the creative direction in a recent interview. He said the team wanted the new season to grow into something different. They did not want to repeat the same energy as Season 1.
“I think that was something we talked about from the beginning, that this was going to be a slower burn than season 1. I think we talk sometimes about Age of Innocence and Scorsese, approaching this story that there’s none of the outward violence that had typified his movies to that point, but you can feel the violence in that story in such an extreme way.”
Schreier added that the show will still deliver what fans expect from ‘Beef.’ The path to the chaos will just be different.
“We’re going to go to places and we’re going to still live up to that same thing that you expect from Beef when we get to the end of this, but we’re going to get there in a different manner.”
The director compared the new season to a band releasing a next album. He wanted the look and feel to change. The camera moves slower. The scenes are longer. The show lets the awkwardness stay on screen.
A New Story With A Star-Studded Cast
‘Beef’ Season 2 takes place at a private country club. The story follows two couples from different generations. Oscar Isaac plays Josh, the general manager. Carey Mulligan plays his wife Lindsay.
The younger couple includes Charles Melton as Austin and Cailee Spaeny as Ashley. They work at the club. They accidentally witness a violent fight between their boss and his wife. Instead of walking away, they film it. They try to use the video for job security and favors.
Korean cinema legends also join the cast. Youn Yuh-jung plays Chairwoman Park, the billionaire owner of the club. Song Kang-ho plays her husband, Dr. Kim.
The season has eight episodes. It will explore class differences and the generational gap between Millennials and Gen Z.
Lies And Hidden Anger Drive The Plot
Jake Schreier pointed to one small detail that holds the whole season together. He said there is a lie in almost every scene.
“There’s a lie in almost every scene of the show. Sometimes it’s a lie someone’s telling someone else. And sometimes it’s a lie that they’re telling themselves.”
The younger couple thinks their relationship is unbreakable. The older couple pretends they can fix their marriage. No one is telling the truth. The show lets the audience see the cracks before the characters do.
Schreier believes the show works best when no one is the clear villain.
“So much about ‘Beef,’ including season one, is about seeing into perspectives from people that you might otherwise dismiss. It’s never just there to be a kind of obstacle or a villain.”
