Jason Statham has built one of the longest-running careers in modern action cinema. Since his debut in Guy Ritchie’s Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels in 1998, he has appeared in nearly 70 films, headlined multiple franchises, and become one of the few stars whose name alone can sell a movie. That rule now looks more fragile than ever. Streaming platforms have changed how actors pick projects. Jason Statham has appeared only in theatrical films. He has never headlined a television series, a streaming original show, or a limited series. He has also never starred in a streaming-only movie, a distinction he shares with Gerard Butler.

Those are the words of producer Basil Iwanyk, known for the John Wick franchise, speaking on The Ringer and Puck’s The Town podcast. Iwanyk said both actors have been offered millions by streaming platforms and turned the offers down.
Statham’s film-only rule places him in a small group. Tom Cruise is one of the only other major stars who has never done a TV show. Most of their peers have moved into television or streaming. Sylvester Stallone leads Tulsa King, now in its fourth season. Arnold Schwarzenegger has done series work. The line between film actors and TV actors has largely disappeared.
Why TV Is a Different Business Now
Television was once seen as a step down for movie stars. That view no longer holds. Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV+, and HBO have produced shows with large budgets and major talent. Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Severance, and The Gentlemen have drawn actors who once worked only in film.
Guy Ritchie’s move into TV makes the idea more realistic. Ritchie and Statham have worked together six times, starting with Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. Ritchie’s The Gentlemen series premiered on Netflix, and Statham attended the UK red carpet premiere to support his friend. Ritchie also has Young Sherlock on Prime Video.
A TV project from Ritchie with Statham in a lead role would fit both of their recent patterns. Ritchie has shown he can build shows that match his film style. Statham has shown he will work with Ritchie whenever the script is right.
Statham’s Failed TV Attempt
Statham has tried television before. He planned to turn J.J. Connolly’s novel Viva La Madness into a 10-part limited TV series. The book is a sequel to Layer Cake, the 2004 crime film that helped launch Matthew Vaughn’s directing career. Statham was set to star in the lead role.
The project did not move forward as a series. Instead, Viva La Madness is now being made as a film. Guy Ritchie is directing, and Statham is starring. Production began in January 2026. The film is billed as a stand-alone feature, not a sequel to Layer Cake. This means Statham’s closest brush with television ended with him returning to film.
Why Statham Has Stayed Away From TV
Statham has given a simple reason for his film-only career. He likes action movies, and he has built his career on them. In a 2015 Guardian interview, he said:
I really like doing action movies. It’s opened the door for me and I’ve had a great career out of it. Why not continue doing something I’ve always wanted to do?
Statham has also cited commitments to The Expendables and Fast & Furious franchises as reasons he avoided TV work. Those franchises required long production schedules and promotional commitments. A TV series would have demanded even more time.
His box office record supports the decision. Statham’s films have grossed more than $8.5 billion worldwide. The Beekeeper earned $163 million globally on a modest budget. A Working Man earned $89 million. Even films that underperform in theaters, such as Shelter, have found large audiences on home video and streaming.
The Upcoming Films That Keep Him Busy
Statham’s schedule through 2028 is already full of theatrical releases. Each one keeps the TV rule intact for now.
- Mutiny is an action thriller directed by Jean-François Richet. Statham plays Cole Reed, a former military member framed for his boss’s murder. The film was released in theaters on August 21, 2026.
- The Beekeeper 2 brings Statham back as Adam Clay. The sequel has a release date of January 15, 2027. Jeremy Irons and Pom Klementieff join the cast.
- Viva La Madness reunites Statham with Guy Ritchie. The film also stars Ben Foster, Jason Isaacs, and Camila Mendes.
- Jason Statham Stole My Bike is an action-comedy directed by David Leitch. Statham plays a fictional version of himself. The film is described as a meta take on his own action star image.
- John Doe reteams Statham with director David Ayer. Statham plays a man with no memory and no name. Production was scheduled to begin in September 2026.
Each project is a theatrical film. None is a TV series or streaming original.
