The action icon known for playing tough guys is taking on his strangest role yet: himself. Jason Statham‘s upcoming movie Jason Statham Stole My Bike officially has a release date. The film will hit theaters on August 6, 2027. Director David Leitch, who worked with Statham on Hobbs & Shaw, is behind this action-comedy that wraps filming this week.

Statham Plays a Fictional Version of Himself in the Meta Action Movie

Unlike his usual characters like a transporter or a beekeeper, Statham is doing something completely different this time. He is playing “global action superstar Jason Statham” in a tongue-in-cheek story. The $80 million project comes from indie studio Black Bear.

Director David Leitch explained what makes this movie special in an April 2026 interview.

“No, he’s playing Jason Statham. He’s playing himself. I think that that’s what’s really interesting about it to me. I think it’s different than some of these other meta movies.”

Leitch also gave fans an idea of what to expect from the tone.

“It’s a small movie, and it’s really a sweet, funny action. There’ll be a lot of action, but you’re going to see Jason be fun.”

The director confirmed that families can watch this one together. The film will carry a PG-13 rating.

“It’s fun, and it’s family, and it’s a chance for Jason and I to do something we’ve been wanting to do for a long time, and that’s, really, get together and make a story with a heart,” Leitch said.

Plot Details and Creative Team Behind the Film

Specific plot details remain under wraps for now. But the title gives a pretty clear hint about the direction. The script comes from Alison Flierl, a writer known for the animated series BoJack Horseman and the School of Rock TV series. The story is credited to Flierl and Scott Chernoff.

This is not the first time Statham has made fun of his tough guy image. He previously played a ridiculously over-confident agent named Rick Ford in the 2015 comedy Spy starring Melissa McCarthy. In that film, his character bragged about surviving crazy stunts, which became a fan favorite.

Producing the movie are Leitch and Kelly McCormick for 87North, the company behind action hits like Nobody and Bullet Train. Statham is also producing under his Punch Palace Productions banner. John Friedberg produces for Black Bear, while Meredith Berg and Ethan Erwin produce for Beryllium Entertainment.

Jason Statham Stole My Bike Faces Box Office Competition

The August 6, 2027 release date puts Statham’s meta movie up against some family-friendly competition. It will open the same day as Disney’s untitled Bluey movie and an untitled event film from Universal.

Statham has a very busy schedule leading up to this release. His 2026 started with the action thriller Shelter, which grossed $53 million at the box office. Next up is Mutiny, scheduled for release on August 21, 2026.

Looking at his 2027 calendar, fans can also expect The Beekeeper 2 on January 14, 2027. He is also set to reunite with director Guy Ritchie for Viva la Madness, though that release date has not been announced yet.
