John Abraham and Sharvari Wagh new film, Vedaa, which has just received a U/A certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The certification was granted on August 6, 2024, after the CBFC demanded the removal of over 9 minutes of content from the movie, leading to notable changes in several scenes.
Details of the Content Removed by CBFC to Grant U/A Rating
The CBFC’s decision to issue a U/A certificate came only after the filmmakers agreed to make multiple edits to the movie. The board’s revision committee insisted on several alterations, including a 1-minute and 16-second disclaimer that now features a voiceover. Additionally, a dialogue deemed derogatory towards women and social identities had to be altered, with the abusive term “behenk*or” being replaced by “bana.”
One of the most significant changes involved the removal of a 2-minute and 16-second scene depicting a hanging. The CBFC also required the filmmakers to mute the mention of “Jodhpur” in reference to the Jodhpur High Court, reflecting concerns about the portrayal of the judicial system.
Further, the board demanded a 30% reduction in violent visuals within scenes set in a court, aligning with their guidelines on the depiction of violence in films. In another instance, a scene where a character listens to a Sanskrit shloka was entirely removed, and text referencing “Brahmin son…Shudra’s son” was ordered to be deleted to prevent any potential communal or caste-based conflicts.
The CBFC also instructed the filmmakers to blur a sequence showing the tearing of currency notes, considering it inappropriate for the film’s rating.
Vedaa’s Journey Through CBFC Certification and Upcoming Release
The journey to CBFC certification was not straightforward for Vedaa. Earlier, Nikkhil Advani and the producers of the film issued a statement explaining the delays in receiving clearance from the CBFC. The statement highlighted the challenges the production team faced, especially as the movie’s scheduled release date of August 15, 2024, approached.
On July 29, 2024, the CBFC’s revising committee finally reviewed the film, leading to the certification being granted after the mandated cuts. The certification process came as a relief for the filmmakers, allowing them to proceed with the movie’s release plans.
Vedaa is set to hit theaters on August 15, 2024, coinciding with India’s Independence Day celebrations. The film is expected to face stiff competition at the box office from Stree 2, starring Rajkummar Rao and Tamannaah Bhatia. Despite the challenges faced during its production, Vedaa is one of the most awaited films of the year, with fans eagerly anticipating its release.
